What defines emo?

I was just arguing with a friend over this and we couldn't come up with a valid answer. At first, we thought emo was a bit more mellow than punk music with whiny vocals and kill-yourself lyrics. Upon further investigation, we found that it really was just punk music with the aforementioned qualities. But when we thought about it, some of lyrics of that type have been found in metal, namely Norther, among others, but everyone considers Norther to be metal. So is it the whiny vocals that are the only real trademark of emo music? If so that's a little bit of a flimsy reason to base a whole new genre of music off of...

nothing defines emo as a musical genre, it's a term pertaining to image and lyrical content. without that, it's just pop-punk/pop-rock

haha. they all have the same exact haircut. but that one guy in the background is wearing a black dahlia murder shirt...

and plus, whenever i ask one of those typical emo kids wearing girl pants or what not in the mall they get all defensive and say it is its own entire different genre... i guess theyre all wrong?

in people I would describe emo as people who have friends with hard lives who get some sympathy and so they decide to amplify their own small problems because they want sympathy and don't have problems big enough to really get it.

I know this one girl who said "my friends stepbrother hung himself and I never really saw him at all, and my sisters friends parents were getting a divorce" like it affected her at all, and I thought it was the stupidest thing I had ever heard.

anyway that's my opinion on what it means in terms of label

In terms of music I would say it's music that would try and capture the feelings of girls who lose a boyfriend and get all sad or a guy who loses a girlfriend or a person who thinks their parents want them to be perfect.

I would say problems like that are caused in teenagers cause they just let these thoughts form in their heads before even trying to see if what they're thinking is true or if they can solve the problem that makes them think what they think. For example: a teenager who has bad grades in school because they don't study for tests, their parents might say they should get better grades and then they end up thinking that their parents want them to be perfect when they could just study.

I think emo music amplifies problems in teens because one little thing could be suggested as something bigger in their minds.

for example a line from an emo song "you're always there to point out my mistakes and shove them in my face", if the parent in the example above said they should get better grades and the person had listened to this song a lot they would think of their parent saying that as what was said in the song.

damn my response was long...

i think emos are people who are "unlucky" - they sit crying in the corner, an gonna scribing themselfes.

oh I know a joke:

"why is a emo going to sign off the contact to his girlfriend?"
- "he was lucky with her!"

Yeah I think it's basically pop-rock with bad lyrics and an image. But according to everyone in my school, the only definition of emo is black hair, cutting wrists, whatever MTV tells them is emo, and apparently "screaming, depressing heavy metal music that's for emos and very sad, depressed people who like to cut themselves"...

Emo = Pathetic and withering excuse for a man who uses common problems with simple solutions into a faggot way to express emotions and lifestyle...not to mention a hairstyle wayyyy cooler than Edward Scissorhands.

you are all ignorant, retarded kids who know nothing about it and just want to act cool in front of the other ppl here, quit your whining

Why is there a "real" defition for everything.
cuz these days are just diffrent. From the moment one of these bands became mainstream, everybody started painting there hair and acting all "emo" but these ppl are just posers. You'll never know a real emo when you see one.

actually I am, I know some posers and I know real emos so I know the diffrence, you on the other hand obviously don't
Call me shallow. I dont give a flying fuck about any of it. Maybe its different in your country..I dunno. You should be paying attention to the real scene in Belgium, the metal scene. Axamenta,Thurisaz, and Saturnus are where its at, not emo shit.

1. I pay attention to whatever I want
2. there's almost no metal scene where I live
3. there's no such thing as "the real scene" because it's all subjective
4. Saturnus ain't bad but I prefer my dying bride and inborn suffering
5. emo is not shit, ppl who say this are

If you try to play rock but have a strong desire to get fucked in the ass, your emo as fuck. I don't care what defines it as a type, I don't want it around me. :puke:
