Actually, prog music is not progressive by its very definition. Hence PoS is not prog but progressive as is Opeth. The flower kings are prog.

I like a lot of "prog" music, but I also hate all its cliches much more than with other music. It's because "progressive" implies that they're taking music in some new direction, when they're really just rehashing the same stuff.

That's why I like actual progressive bands much more, like Opeth, Enslaved, Meshuggah, Kayo Dot, Estradasphere, etc. I'd also throw Pain of Salvation in there, because while they have a huge "proggy" sound, they're also very creative and deviate from it a lot.

Estradasphere is really insane!! but really good, they go from Flamenco to Grindcore to Jazz, pretty good stuff

i think that metal and progressive describe completely different things...metal is distorted guitars, growling, double bass, etc...

progressive describes the mode of composition.

DEFINITION OF PROGRESSIVE MUSIC = Music that changes tempo, has extra technicality on instruments, and songs that tend to be longer than average songs. Btw, this is not my definition, i just got it off of a website, and from my cousin who works in a music store.

Personally i really enjoy prog metal (the likes of Dream theater, Opeth and Symphony X)

I enjoy all kinds of music but its more interesting personally for me to listen to many different styles combined into one song/album. Its all a matter of personal taste though as whats amazing and unique to one person is shit and mind numbing to the other.

to those questioning my statement:

When I say prog metal, I'm not using metal as a category, I'm using it as a genre. All the metal music that isn't categorizable as death or black or thrash etc. I call plain old metal.

Prog metal includes Dream Theater, Symphony X, Pain of Salvation, and all the rest of that crap, but not Opeth or Cynic by my parameters.

i disagree...i think that what is listed there is characteristics that progressive music may have...

to me, "progressive" should not describe the style of play, or instruments, or song length, or tempo changes...progressive music describes the path which leads to music being made...it is like a frame of mind...

progressive music is free of boundries..... tagging characteristics or cliches to the idea of progressive music is holding it down...there is no real way to describe it, because trying to categorize it defeats the meaning.

I used to listen prog metal much but now i cant stand some of the songs. But its hard and generaly bands include great musicians.

Prog metal includes Dream Theater, Symphony X, Pain of Salvation, and all the rest of that crap, but not Opeth or Cynic by my parameters.

And yes totally agree.Death/Prog or Thrash/prog is totaly different thing

King Crimson is prog. They are, in a way, the founders of Prog. King Crimson esque stuff is prog. Anything progressing (like King Crimson ) is progressive. Therefore KC is progressive prog but Pain of Salvation is progressive and Opeth is also progressive because these bands have no boundaries except for opeth's basslines.

Opeth and PoS definitely fall in the same category. Opeth is like PoS with less technicality but more extreme when it comes to moods. PoS is like Opeth but with a talented keyboarder.
