what does doom metal sound like?

i see the term all the time, but i am not quite sure what it describes. i picture music that sounds like black sabbath's "electric funeral" opening with type o negative style vocals. any help? also, aside from my dying bride, what are some good doom metal bands to check out?

It can describe a lot of different kinds of music... some very heavy and deathy, some much lighter. Brutal to melodic and majestic.

Some of my favorites, aside from old MDB, are Amorphis "Tales From the Thousand Lakes", old Anathema, Left Hand Solution "Fevered", old Paradise Lost, and my absolute favorites... Solitude Aeturnus' first two releases - "Into the Depths of Sorrow" and "Beyond the Crimson Horizon".

Well, there's all the stoner doom like Electric Wizard, Cathedral, Orange Goblin etc.. which is more like the Sabbath track you mentioned, then you have the doom that the majority think of like My Dying Bride, old Paradise Lost, old Katatonia, old Anathema etc...
