What was your first encounter with metal?

Kiss-Dynasty. I got this album for Christmas when I was 10 (I think). To be honest, as a kid I think I mainly liked them because of the masks and costumes, then I got Dynasty. My best friend at that time was an AC/DC fan - influenced by hid dad ... we exchanged records and on it went ...

I'm sort of the same - Early 90's, loved Guns N Roses (and still do)

First real metal for me though, was Slayer - Black Magic. Has been one of my favourite songs (if not, THE favourite), ever since I heard it.

I know they arent metal, but Atreyu. They were the band that got me into harder music and screaming vocals. Also In Flames, and Children of Bodom.

Korn - Follow the Leader

I listened to that album in highschool 8 years ago together with some Limp Bizkit album I can't remember the name of. That was pretty much the first time I voluntarily listened to metal. I'd seen metal videos on TV before (I distinctly remember seeing One by Metallica a lot) but never understood how people could like that stuff. I also started listening to noisier rock bands like Garbage and Marilyn Manson around that time.

From there on I got into industrial (starting with NIN, onto proper industrial like FLA and Skinny Puppy) and metal bands like Arch Enemy, In Flames, CoB, etc (kind of the 'easy listening' extreme metal bands basically). And from there on I went into more extreme and obscure territory and also started discovering lots of other and unrelated genres.

I actually do still like a lot of those bands (even Marilyn Manson), but Korn or Limp Bizkit is definitely something I absolutely hate now. But I still can't say I regret listening to them because they were the first step.

I listened to "grunge" for a long time even though my brother who is 32 now was very into hair bands and I heard alot of that stuff but I really delved into metal myself in 1996 after discovering Sepultura's Arise album at a pawn shop.

It ruled.

I still listen to basically everything I listened to before and tons more stuff now. I especially love Alice in Chains. Jerry Cantrell's latest release the double album Degradation Trip is superb.

The hooks were set seeing Bon Scott many years ago...Like all kinds of metal/hardrock as long as it's good...

I don´t remember, probably CoF.

How the hell you can call NIN metal?
KoRn=>Nu-metal is not metal musically.

The first had to have been metallica - And Justice for All... and then
Old Mans Child- In Defiance of Existance really got me into black metal., and now I have about 95 black metal cds, in only 2 years

First metal I heard was metallica. I started getting into their stuff, and then my guitar teacher recommended me some stuff, and I started getting into iron maiden and sabbath. That was when I was about 10, and then i got into Symphony X, which brought me to this forum. (I'm only 14, so there was internet.) I started browsing CoB, and that was the first screaming vocal group I got into. After that, I started getting into Death, black, and thrash metal. I think the first death metal group I listened to was Death, and then it went from there.

When I was in middle school I wanted to get a cd player for christmas because most of the guys where into music and I wanted to hear what they where listening to myself. My first cds where by 98 Degrees and Smashmouth - Astrolounge (the only cd I asked for [smashmouth]my mom just got me the 98 Degrees). Then of course everything those kids listened to I ended up buying like Limp Bizkit, Creed, but I only got the edited versions because I had too. Than i believe I started to get into Rage Against the Machine, the Offspring.

My first metal song ever was:
Metallica - Fade to Black i think

Than in 8th grade I saw this kid who had an Iron Maiden CD "Killers", I thought he played an IM song and I started to download songs off audiogalaxy by them. Than came Slayer, Sepultura...and now I'm where I am today. Than I listened to melodeath like In Flames, Arch Enemy, The Haunted...the modern crap. Haha, I used to think those gothenburg bands were so awesome.

I started to get into the "good stuff" when i came to metal archives and here.

Bah, get over it, it counts. If someone considers it their gateway to metal, than it must be.

Once upon a time ago, I was 11 or 12 years old.. Those days I was listening to New Kids on The Block, Bon Jovi stuff but not metal. At those times all the Saturday evenings my parents were taking me to one of their friends home.. They were playing cards, chatting, laughing but I was madly sitting and watching Tv. I was always bored there. They had a son of age 22 these days and he had long hair, torn jeans etc. I was only 11 and I loved his hair. It was forbidden for me to enter their son's room. Their son strictly warned me not to. But I was yearning to.. One day, he wasn't at home and I crawled to his home.. What was that... guitars.. wow.. there were 2 electro guitars and posters were hung all over the walls and there were casettes all around.. I snatched one of them and left the room immediately.. I put the cassette into my walkman.. there was a song.. later I discovered that it was "fear of the dark".. I felt in love with Iron Maiden at the first time and started to search for other albums other bands like them and I found myself as a metal head till that day..... :headbang:

When I was in diapers I listened to reign in blood. I use to rebel against the bottle from there on. I was so grim I did not even need a bottle... I just sucked on some others kids moms tits. Milk does the body good. The little kids were jealous because I got all the action. Some of those M.I.L.F's were smoking hawt too.
