What was your first encounter with metal?

I first heard Slipknot, then to more nu-metal, then grew tired of nu-metal, found Meshuggah, Opeth, and Children of Bodom, and then to bands like Suffocation and Immolation.

ozzy osbourne -- gets me through
korn -- first album (much later in life)
i thought korn was the heaviest band ever :erk:
god i was young
i was into grunge before metal -- still love it and it still influences my tastes

ps lol @ptah knemu for quoting me in your sig:headbang: your quote of yourself is better tho

There used to be this channel on directv (Channel 816 i think) that played metal songs and I used to listen to that once in a while and I would write down bands I liked. I don't remember the first song or band but some of the first metal cd's I got were Iced Earth - Horrow Show, Moonspell - Wolfheart and Arch Enemy - Wages of Sin. I used to listen to nu metal :erk: before that but was always kinda wondering if there was something better. I thought things like, why can't bands write anything other than stop and go riffs? And why are the guitars only in the choruses? Luckily I've been thoroughly reeducated since then :headbang:

Uuh, I used to hate a lot of mainstream 'metal' stuff like Slipknot and Children of Bodom. I heard like, Nothing Else Matters and Fade to Black by Metallica and liked those, and then I borrowed Reload and Metallica from a friend.

Liked those a lot, then I bought And Justice For All. The moment I was finished with Blackened I was like "wow, metal *is* my genre after all". Then I spent a too long time with Dragonforce and Blind Guardian.

Moonsorrow and Opeth got me to the more 'extreme' stuff.

Nowadays I've noticed that I hate 90% of metal bands but can't really think of a genre that didn't suck less.

Via my Dads taste in music really - he was (and is, despite being 55) really into his rock and metal...

Key albums I can remember were:

Black Sabbath (self titled)
Iron Maiden (Number of the Beast)
Thin Lizzy (Live and Dangerous/ Black Rose/ Jailbreak)
AC/DC (Highway to Hell)
Judas Priest (Hell Bent for Leather)

I started buying my own vinyll when I was 10 or so with pocket money, which coincided with 1985, the tail end of the first thrash boom. I've been buyin first LPs, then tapes, and now CDs ever since.

Since my dad influenced me, Ive gone on to introduce bands to him that he know likes, such as Paradise Lost, Skyclad, Crowbar and (admittedly post-Elegy) Amorphis.... "The circle is now complete"!

My friend showed me 2 music videos
Disturbed-Down with the sickness
Metallica-Wherever I may roam
and I was hooked

It all started with the video game MLB 06. It had some "heavy" songs on the soundtrack (The Used, Pillar, Saliva), and this got me interested in heavy music. First I bought a few Disturbed songs, I liked them so I decided to check out more. On a recommendation from another forum, I looked up Slayer, downloaded South of Heaven and fell in love.

What got me to the stage I am now of listening to Death Metal, was the iTunes essentials playlist of Death Metal, which I discovered through Slayer. At first I didn't like it (I can remember saying to my friend that I didn't want to listen to a band called Dying Fetus, now they are one of my favorites), but I was curious and ended up finding Hypocrisy and eventually all of Death Metal.

The first metal i actively listened to was Blind Guardian.
But before i listened to some Helloween and Grave Digger on the walkman of a friend, which i actually liked too.
Then i listened to much power metal stuff. Later i got into Dissection, Borknagar and old In Flames.
From then on i mostly listened to black and viking and small amounts of death metal.

i first got into it when some guy at skool just gave me a ticket to see Anthrax so i just went without ever heard about anthrax lmao....and it was awesome so i got into metal.

and im seeing anthrax on the 9th of april again! rock on:worship:

I know they arent metal, but Atreyu. They were the band that got me into harder music and screaming vocals. Also In Flames, and Children of Bodom.

Celtic Frost and Mercyful Fate in 1986.
Then Death and Morbid Angel.
And THEN it was on.
