How is this any different for the "what are your favorite bands?" thread that we have had many times in the past? Anyways, my current favorites are Arghoslent, Mourning Beloveth, Primordial, Sacramentum, Darkthrone, Negator, The Chasm, Burzum, Graveland, Forgotten Tomb, and probably a few more that I forgot to mention. Lately I've also been listening to tons of old Swedish Sunlight Studios death metal, and really digging it, especially Wombbath and Evocation.

I guess these below are the best metal i've heard since it's basically what I rotate the most on my stereo.

Amorphis -the karelian isthmus, tales from the thousand lakes.
Opeth -all
Dissection -storm of the lights bane, the somberlain
Demigod -slumber of sullen eyes
Bloodbath -resurrection through carnage, nightmares made flesh
Sentenced -north from here, shadows of the past, amok
Edge of Sanity -unorthodox,spectral sorrows,purgatory afterglow,crimson 1 & 2
Tiamat -the astral sleep

Well, Bathory is the best band ever. Other than that, I'm a huuuge Iron Maiden fan, but early nineties black metal is my main interest, as that's what I grew up with. Examples:

Immortal - Pure Holocaust
Burzum - first four
Emperor - In the Nightside Eclipse
Mayhem - De Mysteriis
Enslaved - Vikingligr Veldi
Graveland - Thousand Swords

I also like a lot of old school death metal, such as

Morbid Angel - first three
Death - first four
Possessed - Seven Churches

And... yeah, so on....

Death Metal:
Immolation- Close to A World Below (eveything good about death metal album brought to superiority and originality... nothing else from death metal comes close except for At the Gates's The Red in the Sky is Ours, The Chasm's Deathcult For Eternity, and a couple others that escape my current thought)

Black Metal:
Aeternus- ...And So the Night Became (epic black metal perfection, alongside Burzum's Filosofem, Sacramentum's Far Away From the Sun, and Summoning's Dol Guldur... for me, sums up the 'big four' of black metal)

Thrash Metal:
Slayer- Hell Awaits (for me, thrash metal's peak... superb songwriting matched with the proto-death metal elements that Morbid Angel and many others would take note of)

Power Metal:
Fates Warning- Awaken the Guardian (extraordinary power metal that I am still trying to find others in the genre can match the quality of... Slough Feg is one band that have done a great job of coming close)

Doom Metal:
Disembowelment- Transcendence into the Peripheral (the overlooked doom metal paragon, absolutely crushing stuff... Thergothen's Stream from the Heavens and Cathedral's Forest of Equilbrium are also highly worthy albums of this genre, which I still have yet to explore alot of)

This thread is kind of pointless considering there's already a thread where you can list as much of this stuff as you want, and possibly get even more discussion on it because it's viewed more than non-sticky threads.

So everyone, take your favorite bands over there and then we can talk!
