What's with the Opeth backlash??

Immortal
Summoning
The Chasm
Bathory (except 2 albums)
Dark Tranquillity
Primordial
Sacramentum

All waaaaaaay better than Opeth. :)

I love Sacramentum but the bands carrer was cut short. I disagree about them being better than opeth. Sacramentum had room to expand but never had the chance.

It's a shame because anders is an amazing guitarist & I do not think the guy has made music for atleast 8 years.

Not one of those is better than opeth. :)

Out of the list you dismissed off-hand, I have listened only to The Chasm.

As someone who has listened to Opeth's entire discography I categorically place The Chasm above anything Opeth's done.

ps. actually I place the chasm above any dm band I've ever heard.

I don't fucking understand fans of The Chasm... when I read reviews and heard people talk about them, I got to the point where I was expecting the most epic, virtuoso, musically devastating death metal release I'd ever heard. And when I finally got to hear them... it was mediocre. Well executed, memorable riffs (sometimes), but the drums, vocals, guitar leads, all the stuff that I look for to make a death metal album "stand out", they.... well... didn't stand out. Just mediocre overall. Good, but like so many other bands I've heard before.

The Chasm might not be as good or as hyped as many make them out to be. The bands chord progressions are still more interesting than many regular death metal bands. I would say the band has suffered from really dull production jobs.

Those are my thoughts exactly. I don't fucking get the hype over this band. I went out and bought Deathcult for Eternity, and except for the occasional good stuff, it's rather mediocre.

It's just hard to pierce the surface of Deathcult. It takes time, patience, etc. - and rewards these things with an immensely enjoyable album. I'd suggest you listen to Conjuration of the Spectral Empire and possibly Spell of Retribution. The music isn't as muddy and obscure to the ear, which makes it easier to hear all the amazing things going on in the music. They're really fuckin' unique for a death metal band.

Ditto.

Edit: Actually I could probably get into them if I listened to more.

That's a good mindset to have. Fact is, if bands are generally overhyped in the underground, by people who's tastes are generally respectable, it's usually because not enough people are giving the band in question the time or attention it deserved to really sink in, and are passing it off as overrated :erk:

Eh, I guess I'll try them out again. The only album I had before was Deathcult, which I didn't particularly care for. Should I maybe get a different one? Or just jump back into that one, and hope for a different experience than last time...

Possessed is vastly superior, much more compositionally sound, and completely more interesting. I feel that Seven Churches transcends its age entirely. I suggest you at least listen to it.

Totally agree. Seven Churches has been one of those albums that still gets regularly play (since the 80's.)

it's a fine theory, but something funny happens as the attention does get let on. Remember Opeth 8 years ago? me neither. But i do 7 years ago. It was a very different story from now.

look... Opeth are tallented musicians, that put together some quality songs. I am a fan but far from a fan boy.
TO ALL THE FAN BOYS OUT THERE: Opeth are peopel liek you and me... they are not gods... they are not immortal, nor can they destroy small villages.
though, I bet ol mike's dick probably fell off from all the crippling std's he got from letting people slobber all over his dean in 1999. BUT nonetheless i am still a fan.
(cept theyre not coming to vancouver... fuck you)

Mikael Akerfeldt single-handedly caused the tsunami by flatulating in the ocean after eating at Taco Bell. It's a documented fact. His ass is that powerful, don't be fooled.

Taco Bueno > Taco Bell

dunno if you have teh bueno but it rules.

i conced that taco cabana > both
