My judgement of you is tarnished.

Mumblefood said:whoa. I never expected anyone to say that :s No one growls like him, it's extremely unique, and to me it sounds to much "clearer" than everyone else, and the tone of it is something i just adore. I thought it was pretty generally accepted that his growl is one of the best in metal.
cookiecutter said:I just listened to Blackwater Park and to me it was extremely boring. I tried very hard to like it because Opeth are so hyped and my friend loves them, but I just didn't hear anything. Every single riff sounded exactly the same to me. The death vocals were nothing to write home about, and the vaunted clean parts seemed to just be inserted randomly and didn't really work for me.
What am I missing here?

Zephyrus said:Eventually, Opeth will consume you and you will find yourself in another dimension while entranced by their music. Its an enlightening experience.
Zephyrus said:Hypocrisy has a few clean sung songs too, which puts them progressively higher than most death metal bands.
Crimson Velvet said:Or not. That's possible too, you know. I enjoyed Opeth for many years. Since "Morningrise" was released until "Damnation", I considered them to be one of my favourite melodic death metal bands. But then, as my musical horizen expanded, it dawned on me that Opeth aren't as brilliant as I originally thought. They aren't as subtle and enduring as many other bands. My guess is that you will discover this too, when you've listened to metal for a few more years.

Mumblefood said:That's awfully elitist of you. Though it hasn't been 10 years for me as an Opeth fan, it has been about 7, and i still consider them one of the most unique and brilliant bands in metal. They aren't my favorite anymore, granted, but I haven't decided to turn on them and downplay their abilities. Besides, being "subtle" doesn't automatically make a band better, and i'm not even sure what you mean by enduring. Do you mean you can listen to other bands longer?
Mumblefood said:Of course there are "better" bands out there. But Opeth fills a niche all their own, and in that regard, they are the best at what they do. It's impossible to objecify just how good a band is anyway, and though it is easier to tell when the bands play similar styles, when they aren't doing the same thing and trying to achieve the same goals, it's rediculous to try and justify calling one better, unless you only mean you enjoy them more. And at that point, who cares? It no longer has to do with other people anyway
That's not exactly an easily answerable question for ANY band, even ones you know for sure are cutting edge. Perhaps a better question is how bany bands do you know of who sound even remotely like Opeth over the last 10 years? I haven't heard anyone with the same flair for songwriting. There's that shitty April Ethereal band (with an album called Advent...) but they really just suck. Dark Suns is somewhat similar, but still way too different. In The Woods may have sounded a bit like the first 2 albums, but not near the dissonance.
