What's with the Opeth backlash??

By merit of Opeth being one of the first handful of bands that people get into these days, they are absolutely and unequivically an entry level band. ;)

When I think of an entry level band, I think of a band I would play to someone who had never listened to heavy metal and I was trying to convert, or that person had interest in the genre. I would never claim that any band that makes use of extreme vocals (death metal in this case) are an entry level band, no matter what people think of the music. I have friends who like certain parts of Opeth songs, but they all say the same thing in the end, being "I like the music, but I dont like the vocals." People in general just plain don't like death metal vocals even if the music around it is acoustic, soft, progressive, etc.

In that sense, I feel bands like Fear Factory and Pantera who incorporate mild to moderate screaming in their music (except for SOANM by FF) are much more accessable to non-metal listeners.

But in the end.......who gives a shit, right?

Why do you keep making the same argument that everyone keeps shooting down due to the fact that it doesn't hold up when presented with the evidence that many people are introduced to the genre through Opeth? And why are you defending it like it's a bad thing to be any entry level band? Fucking stop it.

yeah stop it now you damn fools stop it

Opeth was not entry-level for me, only recently did I become a fan - after being really into black & death metal (etc) for a long time.

They're one of the biggest Metal bands in the market today. They're bound to be one of the first bands people are exposed to. It's not negative, it's common fucking sense. Now get over it.

If you're trying to tell me that you're not using "entry level" with a negative connotation, then you're lying. Come on. That's like referring to something as "mallcore"... it's hardly flattering.

Teh!! :OMG:

That kind of crazy talk is not tolerated around here one bit!

You're obviously crazy, lying, or both!!

*now, ixnay on the entry evel-ay...* :err:

Believe it or not, Opeth is certainly one of the top 10 most popular extreme metal bands. They're probably almost on par with DB, CoB, and In Flames. They're popular enough to sell out "An Evening with Opeth" in Chicago and New York, and probably LA. A band like Nile (with Hypocrisy and four other bands), which is also rather popular didn't come close to selling out the same venue in Chicago. In Flames was able to sell it out though. Soilwork + Dark Tranquility, two accessible bands, not even close.

A entry level band to extreme metal is still a entry level band!
