i never shave that. But it needs a crazy Satan goatee like you had the last time I saw any picture of you. Or that's at least what I thought of when I saw your old avatar.
i'm glad you capped the keyword.Dream Theater WERE innovators of the progressive-metal genre,
Well I obviously got in a bit late on this thread but oh well. I think this is just another example of DT trying to franticly catch up with the rest of the genre and then trying to pass it off as innovation. Pain of Salvation already did this fan interaction thing 2 years ago having the answering machine messages on their "Be" album. DT fans were also praising DT for being "innovators in the genre" when they had real strings on the Octavarium album, something bands like Nightwish, PoS, and Therion have been doing for years. It looks to me that DT has finally realized that they are no longer spearheading the genre's musical direction and they have some catching up to do.
You can't put DT in the same genre as Nightwish and Therion and PoS... Nightwish and Therion are both Operatic-prog-power-metal and Pos are just gay... (j/k, but I don't like them very much...) Dream Theater WERE innovators of the progressive-metal genre, but strings aren't really that innovative anyway... They sound great, but yeah bands have been doing it for years, and it's not DT's fault, they just use them cos it sounds good...
Well that was exactly my point, sure they may have been innovative in the genre, but not anymore. Now they seem to be scrambling to keep up and I feel they are being out played by a lot of younger more creative bands. The same thing happened to Metallica, they were kings of the genre (Heavy Metal) for a long period of time, but instead of leading the charge they got a bit self conscious and made some really stupid moves trying to emulate other younger bands (St. Anger). Well Dream Theater has done the same thing, they tried to take a more Nu Metal approach with "Train of Thought" instead of just doing their own thing. They started using real strings on "Octavarium" (which also had direct take offs of bands like U2 and Megadeth, why?), instead of doing their own thing. Now it appears they are doing these fan interactions just like PoS did, instead of doing their own thing. So now instead of getting albums like "Scenes from a..." that are like nothing anyone has heard we are just getting take offs of things we have heard many times before. I feel that if DT doesn't start just playing and writing their own style of musc they are going to be completely eclipsed by bands like Symphony X, PoS, and now Circus Maximus (whose debut album was far superior musically to any other band's debut album I have herad) which are writing their own completely unique music. Just my humble opinion, but I am sticking by it.
Don't forget to RTFM, too!STFU and GTFO.
I don't think we should abuse him for it...
First off, IMO, Adagio's debut album, Sanctus Ignis by far blows The 1st Chapter out of the water. Both are amazing albums, but Sactus Ignis is above so many bands, even some of Symphony X's material cowers in fear of that album. In short, Sanctus Ignis = Best Debut album ever.
Second off, just because a band wants to do something doesn't mean that they're any less respectable. It could be as simple as Rose said, in that they just wanna write what they wanna write. Are they not allowed to do stuff that's been done before? Is there some clause in the Constitution which forbids this?
And never put Dream Theater in the same category as Nightwish ever again.
Now that I think about it, you remind me of SKnight, this dude who we collectively owned in the other DT thread. The two of you both completely ignore the fact that bands are allowed to try something new.
