Why all the dislike for GR?

^^The great atmosphere is still there, just different. And Mikael has definitely not lost his songwriting skills. I can't believe you're talking about the same album I've heard.

idk what ur talkin about theres timber all over GR look at all the lyrics about forests and trees!

I don't understand all the dislike for the keyboards on GR... I thought that was one of the things that make this album and gives it such a deliciously evil atmosphere  Though GR was the album that got me into Opeth in the first place, so maybe it's just because that's the Opeth i'm used to

Ghost Reveries is a "grower". At first I thought it was pretty lazy, and just dragged on too much, and the keyboards seemed inappropriately placed. But after listening through it over and over, I have found that the songwriting is just so brilliant. There are so many elements that at first you don't even think about, the various polyrhythms (especially in Atonement), Mikael's singing/growling, and the dark, but also soothing melodies with the guitar, all combine to make Ghost Reveries a great album. People need to understand that Deliverance, at least in my opinion, had a style that was going nowhere. Opeth needed something different, almost a different style but still sticking to their Progressive Death sound they had already created with Blackwater Park and Deliverance. This was achieved with the addition of Per on the keyboards, which ended up as a plus for the album. I love Ghost Reveries, and I would like to hear a solid opinion on why this album is bad, other than that it is not necessarily "true" to Opeth and their roots.

I consider MAYH completely flawless. There's not one second on the album i don't like. And it's the only time they really got album architecture and flow right. I don't listen to MAYH as seperate songs, it's always all the way through every time.

Amen, brother. Amen.

DOTF is way overplayed
Thats your fault.

Credence is awesome but short, Karma isnt that great, and epilogue is fantastic but its a 4 minute instrumental so that doesnt really count either. So basically mayh is like 3 songs + some other stuff.
So your best argument for MAYH ending ''after amen corner'' is that one song isnt that great and that great 4 min+ songs doesent count for being too short?

keep in mind, folks, that we're comparing apples to apples..

ANY opeth album is still better than 95% of every other piece of garbage release lately....
Agreed... cringe every time i have to listen to the "hard rock" station in my area... I swear if i have to listen through another Nickelback or Hoobastank song then someone's life is gonna end

because Mikeal has lost his unique songwriting skills. Compared to Morningrise most of GR sound boring - where is the great atmosphere??

lmao you're backward there bub.

Morningrise = boring, glued together strophic melodeath. every song could easily be cut in half. its fuckign redundant meandering trite shit. i'm one person who doesn't mind them skipping Morningrise songs when they tour.

no, all of it. I dont' really like any one song off MR. there's a few cool riffs/solos/acoustic passages. but it sucks and bores me for the most part.

Fair enough, you're allowed to dislike it. But you can't say that Advent & TBYF are glued together.

Edit - well actually you can say it, but you'd be wrong.

actually, hes right. for once in his narrow minded, generic metal worshipping stupid life. hes right. although i dont think the albums are as bad as he makes them out to be.

Meh, i swear Advent is really close knitted. The album as a whole is confusing as far as which track is which when you have your first few listens, but its far from being as patchy as Orchid and, to repeat myself: I'm gonna stand by saying Advent is pretty well structured and flows nicely.

it probably flows the best of most of that album (i honestly think to bid you farewell is the one song which actually sounds complete and wholesome on morningrise), but that doesnt mean its well put together. but its your right to continue clutching at straws, go ahead.

I'm not clutching at straws lol, I used Advent & TBYF as my initial examples.. I didnt change from this opinion. But never mind, theres no point in going down the petty argument road so I'll leave it at that.
