Your Favorite Viking/Folk Metal Band

one of my favorites. really sucks that they broke up :(

word.

I didn't know that :(

does that mean you don't know about Tverd (his new band)?

same great guitar style.
unfortunately there's even more woodwind noodling (which was always one of the worse elements of Pagan Reign to me).
the main difference is male (and female) operatic vocals, instead of BM vox.

fuckin' love the guitar solo on "When the Steel is Being Broken"

I'm a long time fan of Amorphis and Ebony Tears. Ebony tears has some great violins, especially on the album "Tortura Insomniae":headbang::headbang:

None of the bands that you just named are part of the genres that this thread is about, but okay.

Amorphis can be mentioned in this thread. Ever since Tales From the Thousand Lakes they've incorporated significant folk elements into their music.

Black Lotus (if you like Borknagar)
Shambless
Ancient Rites
Scald (thanks be to cook-ta for recommending them)
Ereb Altor
Black Messiah

Just to name a few.

Anybody here dig Lost Legacy? I've been listening to them more lately, they're pretty epic.

Satyricon
Borknagar
Enslaved
Bathory
Ulver

By these what other Viking/Folk metal bands could I get into?

I'd call most of that Pagan Black Metal or Folk/Black Metal

Solgrav
Taunusheim
Wolfchant
Slavland (here's just a fragment, more legal as anything put on youtube
dry.gif
)
also, track down Temnozor's unreleased tracks

I just discovered Askival. The album's called Eternity. Holy fucking shit.

This song is just acoustic, but it's great:

Equilibrium shouldn't really be considered viking metal, just like Turisas shouldn't. They don't sound like traditional viking metal at all, nor do they contain very many folk elements (other than a synthesized flute here and there).

That said, it doesn't change the fact that they really are quite good, and some songs from Sagas are incredibly epic.
