Ahoy! :)

Just a question - what band did you discover for the first time in 2001 that you don't think you could live without now?

My pick would have to be System Of A Down, who're so unique that they just boggle me! Also, an unsigned band from Germany - Mystica Solitudinis - who are about as close to my taste in music (melding various styles and just sounding bitchin!) as could be possible.

Mark :)

Taken! I was never really into the whole hardcore/metal/jazz crossover thing until I got sent the 'And They Slept' album for review - now I'm listening to just about every band on Eulogy records, Goodfellow records, Revelation records and all the other labels that specialise in hardcore/metalcore bands! But none of the ones I've heard yet are fit to tie Taken's shoelaces...

Listen to them now!

Edit : Just thought of another one... can I have two? I don't care, I'll say them anyway - everyone into extreme black metal should listen to Anaal Nathrakh - they're about the most ridiculously fast, heavy and brutal black metal band I have ever heard in my life, and they're fantastic. Debut album 'The Codex Necro' should be an essential purchase. :)

I have to say it's Iced Earth, I heard them a cupple of years ago, but never got into them. Until this year, I even bought the Dark genesis box, just to have the old records.

shape of despair, evoken, absu (i'd heard their older stuff, just never liked, but tara rules), zyklon, myrkskog, sirius, and oceans (some of their stuff is really good), Fog( you must check out through the eyes of night, it fuckin rules. great old school black metal), gorguts (yeah yea, i never heard em til from wisdom to hate), zero hour, winds.

well, Dark Tranquillity, Opeth, Borknagar, Katatonia... just to mention a few...
and all (except bork...) because of THIS board!
thank you!

This is pretty difficult. I think 2001 has been a good year for albums, and debut albums, but i dont think there has been any band that has realeased a debut where i haven't been listening to their demo's etc. for a few years.
Thorns' debut album is awesome, but i'd been listening to them/him for atleast 5years. I'd totally agree with Dill about the Anaal Nathrakh album, too, i listened to their demo's a couple of years ago and was very impressed, but thought they'd split up after lack of interest... how wrong i was.
I too first heard Solefald this year, due to my ignorance mainly. I heard them discribed as a more experimental CoF, which did not really interest me at all. It was only until i managed to borrow an album off a friend when i realised they were pretty damn good.

Anyway, enough babble.

My greatest discovery this year is Finntroll, with Solefald a close second. i dunno how Finntroll manage to create their almost 'fun' sounding, tap [stamp!] your feet metal, but they do.

Porcupine Tree - Simply the Gods of modern ProgRock

Devin Townsend - Terria is a stunning synergy of Pop/Rock and immense Metal sound! The album of the year...
