in the world of extreme metal (though the focus isn.t limited to this genre alone) many of the musicians have obviously honed talent and it.s quite apparent that tons of hours and years of practice were put in to the perfecting of their skills and styles.. but.. almost always the lyrics are p*ss.. across the board.. i mean how many can be said to have an outstanding ways with words without credible doubt or relevant argument .?. many of the players are proven with undeniable evidence to be of tremendous musical talent.. but the writers .?. come on.. if they.re going to demand such excelled and excellent playing for their projects why isn.t there also a demand for high quality of the words being yelled .?. because of course its the vocalists that most are focused on generally speaking.. and it pisses me off.. because as a fan i demand well written words.. and there just isn.t much out there at all.. instrument seminars and music lessons available in every town.. enough to choke the entire human population.. but no ones studying words.. to the ear that listens its obvious that most lyrics are just whipped together with a fraction of time and effort put in to and demanded of the instrumental parts.. in the extreme metal genre the words are obviously often meant to shock (and usually not even a good job of that) barely if ever can these any of these words and phrases be considered advanced or inspiring or profound to any extent.. especially when you hold them up and compare them to the levels of which some have brought themselves to musically.. but i guess the idiot masses are appeased by "f*ck" and "sh*t" and "r*pe" so the writers aren.t going put the same pressure on themselves to put words together with high standards.. but i mean why then even pressure yourself to write good intrumental parts .?. if you.re going to be half-assed do it all the way.. the guitarists and drummers put their time in.. the lyricists need to shut the fuck up for a few years and study literature and language and not be satisfied with first draft highschool level poetry.. the people with minds to discriminate against the mediocre and mundane will notice..

I'm not going to waste my valuable time reading that mess, nor should anyone else

So now in this topic, we talk about the amazingness of Arghoslent

Well, I have read it. What bands have you heard and you think this about them?

1. Well, I find it quite nice... I use to write poetry aswell and I like words that explain things perfectly without a need to say fucking and such... So I disagree.

2. Have to agree on this one.

old stuff i.m not fond of lyrically though i like the sound: deicide.. morbid angel.. slayer.. (lots of old stuff had good music but they couldn.t write worth a shit.. same thing with today.s metal)..

some recent stuff that didn.t impress me lyrically: watchmaker.. swarm of the lotus.. crowpath.. most anything and everything on mtv and radio.. (most of the bands zyphyrus had posted there i know of and all the ones i.m familiar with i must say don.t have much ability with words).. (i did check out that band Arghoslent that was suggested some of the words are ok but seriously and not to be an ass or just argue its not over the top)..

this whole thing started when i was watching some footage of the drummer of cryptopsy and the drummer from vital remains playing solos.. these guys have focused and fully realized ability.. then i look at the words from their respective bands and its like wtf why not just be instrumental project if you.re not going to put equal effort into all parts of the songs..

bands with some ability with their words (though i.m aware these are not extreme or death metal).. tool.. pig destroyer.. agoraphobic nosebleed (i really haven.t been taken aback by the words of any extreme metal so please share with me any non-mainstream suggestions as i give all a listen.. i have high expectations especially from this genre because of the importance they put on the music)

words are boring .?. then why are we overall paying so much attention to the singers and much of the time yelling right along with them .?. i mean either the par has to go up on the quality of words or the metal heads might as well bring the par down on their instrumental parts.. i mean we could go back to the punk mentallity that it doesn.t matter if you can play or sing just come up with $50 enough to buy an amp and guitar at a pawn shop and have 2 or 3 buddies willing to do the same..

my old guitar teacher said "you can turn the amp up as high as it will go but if you don.t know what your doing you.re still going to be saying nothing".. we are aware in the metal-world where we crown our guitar and drum gods that musical ability has to amaze and push boundaries.. when will we also become aware that the necessity of skill should also be on the words .?.

As soon as I saw that brick, I skipped down, and there you gave words to what I was thinking. I swear, the lack of capitalization, punctuation and grammar aren't too bad, but this guy should at least learn to use a period.:goggly:

He does use periods.

If you need good lyrics to enjoy extreme metal, then I don't think you are getting the point. Also, I find it amusing that one would whinge about writing ability, yet write something so annoying to read.

i miss the reasoning behind the one-sided focus.. and thanks for the attacks on my punctuation and writing ability but this gets off the subject don.t you think..

yes.. so.. boycott the bullshit!! demand more from your metal!! haha.. just kidding.. carry on..

It's tough for people not attack you when you use periods for apostrophes and write in huge chunks of non capitalized "English"

Most metal bands have shit lyrics. Even those that have the ability to write somewhat decently usually drown themselves with hackneyed metaphors and cliche'd ideas. Almost every band has this problem though. Not everyone has the ability to write good lyrics, just like not everyone can create a brilliant guitar riff.

Fortunately, in metal (extreme metal especially) the focus is not on the lyrics. The vocals are more about the rhythm and texture than about conveying a message (that's not to say that a message can't be conveyed). Metal is about the music much moreso than a lot of other musical genres. This is part of the reason I enjoy metal.

Do I wish more bands would write good, thought-provoking lyrics? yes
Do I expect it? hell no

I find it really contradictory that this person is criticizing musicians use of English and how they don't put enough effort into their writing.. while he is doing the same thing, probably even worse.

I do agree with him for the most part though.. there are a lot of Metal bands out there with shit lyrics. But by no means is all of Metal lacking in that area. There are several bands I can think of that write meaningful lyrics for example Primordial.

metal seems to an extent a hopeful guess though.. a few promising words here and there but mostly one could just assume with the importance they put on their music that it should be this way with their words.. nowhere else to look anyway .?. i mean pop .?. rock .?. country .?. electronica .?. f*cking emo .?. come on.. not even a hint of hope there.. and even in other genres where heavy focus is put on musical quality like classical or jazz the words are either lacking in substance there as well or not even added because the focus is totally on the instrumentation.. i hear what you.re saying but i can.t be the only one that.s annoyed with how much metal (and music overall) lacks in the one area but excells so much more in the other.. we should expect to be challenged and provoked..

@ tatuued, these lyrics own you.

All still, no more pain
the wind whispering my name
this wound, my last
the darkness around me seems vast
Then a bright light I see
the clouds swirl and they part before me
in the distance a woman approaching
with a gesture she invites me to proceed

Then a bronze horn I hear, it calls me
and the bridge seems to stretch for a lifetime
way before me a palace is rising
out of the mist like a mountain it stands
And it greets me with gates open wide
all around me bloodbrothers by my side
and they show me the seat that bears my name
my place at the table of Oden I do claim

The Hammerchild of my flesh
Of my blood to carry on
When I have reached Oden's end
Of my glorious warrior's trail

Call upon the spirits of our fathers
Long time gone with thunder
Ask them for truth and courage
When trouble is in your way

Learn to read and understand
The signs to few can clearly vision
Listen carefully to what
The Ravens has to say

Oh, hear the Thunder's roar
Greetings from our fathers long time gone
Tell so that no one ever will forget
What is in heart goes from Father to Son

Oh, watch the lightning strike
Feel the powers of the Hammer's pounding on
Take it to your heart and understand
What must live on from Father to Son

Ok, if you want to be challenged, I give you the challenge of writing a post that has capital letters at the begining of sentences, commas thrown in every now and then, and break up the post so it's easier to read.

:)

Sorry, I'm generally not a nitpicker, but the first of your posts was so hard on the ol' eyes that I could not go on past the first few words. I see this as a parallel, you're writing seems similar to BM lyrics in they are hard as fuck to make out, as others pointed out... Want something challenging? Not every rock tune is gonna be an essay on global warming or exactly thought provoking. Rock is music, music to be enjoyed, to ROCK out to, it's only natural that lyrics often get left behind in favor of riffs, and the boring old fuddy duddies that choose to write thought provoking lyrics are often boring in the riff creating department. Not always though, check out Sanctuary, Nevermore, Queensryche. Good lyrics, thought provoking, and rockin'. Count yourself lucky when you find this happy combination, don't expect it.:)
