METAL LYRICS SUCK.

Yes's lyrics are awesome. They make sense in really abstract way.

sometimes... but Yes has some glaring examples for bad execution i could point out... like in "Long Distance Runaround", there's the line "waiting to feel the sound". this seems to be one of those cases where it's meant to sound deeper than it is, but since there's nothing else in the song's context that is explained or referenced in the idea of feeling sound rather than hearing it, since it appears to be nothing but an arbitrary replacement, that this line could just have easily, and most likely originally was, "hear the sound", but in it's current, "deeper" form, actually isn't any better at all and is mostly just confusing... it fails.

but i'm holding them to a pretty high standard since the music is so gr8.

Their music directly describes the music.

liek wahhhw man.

Some songs are indeed poorly executed, but in their long ones like Close to the Edge or Relayer they are great.

"In and around the lake..moutain come out of the sky and they stand there"

but, ya know, that's complete bullshit and you're 100% wrong and ignorant, so, um... :)

actually, i take it back, most indie lyrics are about girls, but if you've never experienced the fact that girls are the most amazing and unpredicatble things on earth, and therefore the best subjects for songwriting, then... sorry, guy. :(

So you think "yo yo yo rims, hoop and hoes" is better than metal lyrics? And all indie rock lyrics are about girls, and nothing else, which makes for shitty lyrics.

No, but good hiphop lyrics (like much of the underground is known for) are better than alot of metal lyrics, and you're so miseducated about indie it is amazing, sure they tend to be about girls but they often are very well done.

You are listening to the heartbeat of the Sage
Sage posses the newest and most revolutionary advance in split second presentation
As well as split second calculation
To protect the future of America
The defense techniques of tomorrow had to be discovered now
But Sage needed more than this
New concepts, new tools, new weapons
By analyzing the past, Sage can project into the future

(Sage Francis)
I used to think that rappers had it figured out
Brass Monkey, St. Ides, Old English, and Guiness Stout
Once a man twice a boy with a choice of vice or voice of spite
Not enough poisons to pick to enjoy this life
Then I thought suicide was a suburban myth
I couldn't see my own hands being the ones I'm murdered with
That is until I traveled this world a bit
I understand now if I lose my nerve I'll get the girl to do it!
She heard the music but preferred the person, she's worth it
The only one I left behind the curtain to work with
Pushin' buttons and playin' with levers
We'll stay together as long as I'm honest in my songs
(Radio) Suckers never play this
Scared shitless of dismissing clear channel playlists
Poorly developed, yet highly advanced
The black music intertwined with the white man's line dance

(Recorded Voice)
Supersonic, super destructive, seemingly unresistable
On the job, around the clock, with 24 hour a day reliability
Constantly monitoring, pulse-taking, controlling
Into a continuous flow of interpretation, which could be understood at a glance

(Sage Francis)
It's not only a time I'm kept
Busy with shivers and cold shakes
Sitting on snow banks
Waiting to be delivered some soulmates
Or wait
Lift and tuck my fate for several levels
Fill my body till they send me an empty face with the head of devils
My breath resembles the smell of flowers
Yanked from life and placed in a vase
Sits and wilts and rots and dies in the name of grave mistakes
That we all make
Believe that we're getting by treating ourselves wrong
Throw me a reindeer John letter party
And ill be there with bells on
Hell spawn
So if he calls the city hall
They still got the gall
To blame the victory all on biggie smalls
From strip malls
To strip clubs
They slip drugs
Into the drinks that kids love
Tell us to drink up and get buzzed
This is the buzz kill, jump into the saddle
Emerge from the dust kicked up in the uphill battle
With my guns drawn and sword out
Pointed towards the couthouse
I sort out words from my war torn mouth
I disassociate the actions with their meanings
On some "ends justify the means" mentality
Plus I'm bleeding
Give me a bandaid a band that can't play
A fanbase with hearing aids and a voice like a hand grenade
I pull the wool over their vision
Pull the pin and push it in 'em
Using women as a pin cushion
A super villian
With some war paint and jokes done in poor taste
We'll see who laughs last all the way to foreign banks

(Recorded Voice)
Ready to take over in a matter of seconds
to protect the future of America
Sage also has protection too
(Come on come on, feel it feel it)
The protection which comes with the possesion weapons of retaliation
But is this protection enough?

(Sage Francis)
(I was) I was B-boyin' in my former body
Singing all the songs at parties
Now I'm like don't let nobody
Through the door in the hotel lobby
I'd wear Armani if they endorse me
So people who are poor can rob me
Then forcefully sex me up
Color me confused when they paint issues black and white
Resuscitate their grey matter right back to life
It's my destiny, she wants me she beckons
She left me for dead but death didnt want no sloppy seconds
I'm certified fresh
I freedom kiss the French for their political dissent
Like *mwah* I do it with tongue this time
And take that bovine blood out your wine
And take that statue back to the lab it was created at
Your huddled masses yearning to breath free
Take 'em back!
Your homeless tempest-tossed to me
Take 'em back!
The U-S-A has cracked

(Recorded Voice)
And as long as we're on guard
As long as we're ready to look ahead
To move ahead
The future of America is secure

Joanna Newsom - Emily said:
The meadowlark and the chim-choo-ree and the sparrow
Set to the sky in a flying spree, for the sport over the pharaoh
A little while later the Pharisees dragged comb through the meadow
Do you remember what they called up to you and me, in our window?

There is a rusty light on the pines tonight
Sun pouring wine, lord, or marrow
Down into the bones of the birches
And the spires of the churches
Jutting out from the shadows
The yoke, and the axe, and the old smokestacks and the bale and the barrow
And everything sloped like it was dragged from a rope
In the mouth of the south below

We've seen those mountains kneeling, felten and grey
We thought our very hearts would up and melt away
From that snow in the night time
Just going
And going
And the stirring of wind chimes
In the morning
In the morning
Helps me find my way back in
From the place where I have been

And, Emily - I saw you last night by the river
I dreamed you were skipping little stones across the surface of the water
Frowning at the angle where they were lost, and slipped under forever,
In a mud-cloud, mica-spangled, like the sky'd been breathing on a mirror

Anyhow - I sat by your side, by the water
You taught me the names of the stars overhead that I wrote down in my ledger
Though all I knew of the rote universe were those pleiades loosed in december
I promised you I‘d set them to verse so I'd always remember

That the meteorite is a source of the light
And the meteor's just what we see
And the meteoroid is a stone that's devoid of the fire that propelled it to thee

And the meteorite's just what causes the light
And the meteor's how it's perceived
And the meteoroid's a bone thrown from the void that lies quiet in offering to thee

You came and lay a cold compress upon the mess I'm in
Threw the window wide and cried; Amen! Amen! Amen!
The whole world - stopped - to hear you hollering
You looked down and saw now what was happening

The lines are fadin' in my kingdom
Though I have never known the way to border 'em in
So the muddy mouths of baboons and sows and the grouse and the horse and the hen
Grope at the gate of the looming lake that was once a tidy pen
And the mail is late and the great estates are not lit from within
The talk in town's becoming downright sickening

In due time we will see the far butte lit by a flare
I've seen your bravery, and I will follow you there
And row through the night time
Gone healthy
Gone healthy all of a sudden
In search of the midwife
Who could help me
Who could help me
Help me find my way back in
There are worries where I’ve been

Say, say, say in the lee of the bay; don't be bothered
Leave your troubles here where the tugboats shear the water from the water
Flanked by furrows, curling back, like a match held up to a newspaper
Emily, they'll follow your lead by the letter
And I make this claim, and I'm not ashamed to say I know you better
What they've seen is just a beam of your sun that banishes winter

Let us go! Though we know it's a hopeless endeavor
The ties that bind, they are barbed and spined and hold us close forever
Though there is nothing would help me come to grips with a sky that is gaping and yawning
There is a song I woke with on my lips as you sailed your great ship towards the morning

Come on home, the poppies are all grown knee-deep by now
Blossoms all have fallen, and the pollen ruins the plow
Peonies nod in the breeze and while they wetly bow, with
Hydrocephalitic listlessness ants mop up-a their brow

And everything with wings is restless, aimless, drunk and dour
The butterflies and birds collide at hot, ungodly hours
And my clay-colored motherlessness rangily reclines
Come on home, now! All my bones are dolorous with vines

Pa pointed out to me, for the hundredth time tonight
The way the ladle leads to a dirt-red bullet of light
Squint skyward and listen -
Loving him, we move within his borders:
Just asterisms in the stars' set order

We could stand for a century
Starin'
With our heads cocked
In the broad daylight at this thing
Joy
Landlocked
In bodies that don't keep
Dumbstruck with the sweetness of being
Till we don't be
Told; take this
Eat this

Told, the meteorite is the source of the light
And the meteor's just what we see
And the meteoroid is a stone that's devoid of the fire that propelled it to thee

And the meteorite's just what causes the light
And the meteor's how it's perceived
And the meteoroid's a bone thrown from the void that lies quiet in offering to thee

Good lyrics about girls... fantastic, actually

Okkervil River

A Stone

Hot breath, rough skin, warm laughs and smiling,
the loveliest words whispered and meant - you like all these things.
But, though you like all these things, you love a stone.
You love a stone, because it’s smooth and it’s cold.
And you’d love most to be told that it’s all your own.
You love white veins, you love hard grey, the heaviest weight, the clumsiest shape, the earthiest smell, the hollowest tone - you love a stone.
And I’m found too fast, called too fond of flames, and then I’m phoning my friends, and then I’m shouldering the blame, while you’re picking pebbles out of the drain, miles ago.
You’re out singing songs, and I’m down shouting names at the flickerless screen, going fucking insane. Am I losing my cool, overstating my case? Well, baby, what can I say?
You know I never claimed that I was a stone.
And you love a stone. You love white veins, you love hard grey, the heaviest weight, the clumsiest shape, the earthiest smell, the hollowest tone - you love a stone.
You love a stone, because it’s dark, and it’s old, and if it could start being alive you’d stop living alone.
And I think I believe that, if stones could dream, they’d dream of being laid side-by-side, piece-by-piece, and turned into a castle for some towering queen they’re unable to know.
And when that queen’s daughter came of age, I think she’d be lovely and stubborn and brave, and suitors would journey from kingdoms away to make themselves known. And I think that I know the bitter dismay of a lover who brought fresh bouquets every day when she turned him away to remember some knave who once gave just one rose, one day, years ago...

Fucking Immaculate. Beautiful. Perfect.

Have I posted in here before? I'm not bothering to look, because this thread sucks.

A lot of Metal bands have great lyrics, a lot of them shit. It's almost exactly the same for pretty much everything that constitutes genre, Metal is just more noticed because of the controversy surrounding the style.

Anyway, Celtic Frost has great lyrics. Even when they had no clue how to speak English as Hellhammer or on Morbid Tales, it's noticable that they were actually trying. Many other bands, for example, as I read on the first page as I pressed the link to page 4, Agalloch. Sabbat from the UK has incredibly well written lyrics, though the substance doesn't really stand up since they're all sledgehammer. Scott Weinrich is a great lyricist, as are many other Doom artists. Pretty much every Power Metal band past the 80's has shit lyrics and shit concepts. Darkthrone's lyrics are fucking awesome. That's all for me.

ok, i'm d/ling some sage francis, but you have to promise to find Okkervil River "Black Sheep Boy", they're from right up the road in Austin so i kinda feel like i owe it to the scene to promote something so amazing.

Alright :) I'll do that.

takes some getting used to the guy's voice, if just because it's so blatantly emoooo (i first heard the album overall described as "dripping with emo" lol), but that's a product of what must be some genuine emotion cos all the lyrics are stellar and the music is extremely well conceived for any genre, with each song having a totally unique identity and always a memorable hook. it's like if the Eagles made an emo-rock album.

...

it's not really even that "emo" musically tho... it's like college rock mixed with alt-country cos it's from Austin.

i love the guy's overtly mature take on relationships and love and heartbreak that never gets too teen-angst or self absorbed nor goes too far into prententious poetry mode....

the drummer is great...

i'll stop gushing now.

1. Embody The Invisible

I demand nothing, but I want it all
What privilege do we have under the sun,
That gives us the right to the throne?

Species come and go, but the earth stands forever fast
All river runs towards the sea, but the sea is never full

To discover the loneliness and be to proud to show the wounds
Will forever wander alone through the years

But I won't let you near
Begging for you to understand
The fear that lives in my soul
Which is an untouched spring

Read, what is written on the silent mouth
What is written in the soul
For which is written in the shining silence
We all have to read

My body will be bent from the burdens
When the shaking floor of life-force
Reveal its chasm underneath
If only one could be two steps ahead

2. Ordinary Story

Egoism dictates human relations
A world where fashion outshines morality
Here success is written in blood-red colours
Designed by the thirst for power

Gather the faithful and propose a toast
To the epoch of indifference

An all to ordinary story
With aftertaste so bitter
Forced to be someone I don't want to be
I'm losing myself. sinking deeper down
I'm caught in the world wound web

A time represented by the void
An excuse without content
Stuck in the abyss of existence
With a content void of excuse

An all to ordinary story
This is my story
With an aftertaste so bitter

Sinking deeper down
I'm caught - I'm cage
I'm gone

3. Scorn

I parish and nobody will know
As my mouth remains still
My heart awaits me. filled with gravel
As the pain grows with each touch

Since I marked her out from my tower
Reality focused through forbidden lenses
She owns enough of preciousness
A penalty given by the source

But I still have no choice through
The hinderens freighten
A labyrinth closing at the edge of space

But they never allow
She's shut... for all beings but one
I give, I scorn, I threat

4. Colony

In your world, the day is no threat
In my world, there is an absence of light
"Genetic superior cell" controlled
By the fathomless and unbearable

A radical new Form of plastic and rage
Biologically optimized
But with a strangling pulse

In your world, you find me worthy
In my world, I "parashoot" my life
A virtual drugstore populated
By the fathomless and unbearable

Machine, meat and blood
In an intimate relationship
The new - superior -
More effective than all the preceding

When we can no longer
Cry and reality is torn
Then it's easy to forget
That the responsibility lies on us all

In your world, the night is no threat
In my world, the darkness
Transforms to a vision of hell
Populated by fathomless and unbearable

5. Zombie Inc

Truth serves them embrace
And defend her case
Part flattery, part threats
"For those who cling to this
Dominion will partake in its fall"

With his silence, he passes the
Judgement over them
"With your feverish signs of force
You'll make them and yourself to
Believe that he still retains his full power"

As a platform for divine foundations,
You want to make them suck

Shallowness and beauty
Was all that concerned her body
But the soul, her divine guest
Were thrust to the bottom

Surrendered to the sect
That has risen from its womb
"For those who cling to this
Dominion will partake in its fall"

6. Pallar Anders Visa

[Instrumental]

7. Coerced Coexistence

I'll take you on a ride
As a part-owner to my pain
Our ideals they collide
Coerced coexistence

I fought the world today - postpone my birth again
We stumble on and one - but bound to die alone

Pine - I'm selling my soul today
Pine - I need some sympathy

This infiltrates my brain
"In the sunshine the sun is mine"
Pitiless wanderer
Close your eyes and bow your head
Grotesque thoughts in a line
Threw my wings ånto the blazing sun
Smile stretched on old trees
Eternal Brining jester masque

Don't hurt a fly they all sing
We're just ants in a great big play
Commercialize-infect-annihilate-progress
Visualize-inhale-pretend-betray

8. Resin

A sad song it was,
Through renewal it brought
And a month seems sometimes shorter
Than a half nights longing

Hidden and hard are the reasons for war
Polar twist, invert and flea

I can't dissolve this feeling of mine
But patience will unlock the door
And the maps of reasons re-written for me
When the wait is over and the punishment is due
Each day I crawl to the hall of the giants

And I beg for mercy -
And I beg for mercy in vein
One night is a mare - two is worse
How can I manage three?

9. Behind Space '99

Call me by my astral name
Breeding fear through wordless tongue
Heavenly thirst - unspeakable pain
Emptied from all human motion
Confront the faceless wrath

Beckoning silent from a sphere behind space
Through twisted ruins of uncompleted dreams
Sights of towers reaching for the moon
Clawing at the skies - they gonna pull it down

Intensity - I feel the lava rushing through my veins
Stars are reforming - to enter the fourth dimension

Beyond all galaxies
Through timeless aeons of frost
Unearthly hunger - angels descent

We are entering dimensions behind space

10. Insipid 2000

Should I defend you for who you are?
The laws are changed and useless!

On their way to a deserted town
Where empty windows wave goodbye
A helpless excuse, a falling reality
I'm changed by the shock
And the weight of the punch
A helpless excuse, a falling reality

Fragments of a futile being
A puzzle to the noble ones
Ignorant and pitiless they stride

The world around me -
Spartanic, minimalistic
A helpless excuse, a falling reality
The large scale plan that once where
You've now drained from life
A helpless excuse, a falling reality

Wo knows the proper reasons
Why it all begins and ends?
Ignorant and pitiless they stride

"You are but a form",
The clean, harsh silence passes
"Genuine" visions by the noble
Ones for the noble ones

11. The New Word

The great word of blessendness
And a feeling of ease
A cup of the well of freedom
And life we joyfully drink
Inside, all was new, but outwards
Nothing had changed

An escapade,
Then to the altar to
Evaluate all parts
Of the great mystery
But all remains
On the same spot,
No signs of a new season

In my hand is a new word,
But the word is still
Without a body
A hidden life-stream that
Swells in the deep
Will soon give the word
A 2nd face
