Mercyful Fate WAS Black Metal then, and Burzum not sounding like Mercyful Fate almost a decade later doesn't change Mercyful Fate from being Black Metal IIRC.

I thought it was a given that MERCYFUL FATE was in the 1st wave of BM, just as BATHORY and CELTIC FROST were. I wasn't even aware it was up for debate.

That said, it doesn't count either way since this thread asked to exclude 1st wave.

Yeah, but I think Bathory should still count due to the overwhelming direct influence and the fact that a lot of 2nd Wave stuff basically just sounds like Bathory anyway.

I haven't been around in awhile, but on the very first evening back I see a post urging that Bathory should be eligible based on "x reason" for a category they weren't eligible for in the first place. Ah..... good old RC.

In all seriousness, it had a bit of sentimental value to me, I missed being around for a bit.

I listed Bathory because their first 3 albums sound like black metal to me and sound better than pretty much all the other black metal I've ever heard. When I hear Mercyful Fate, I hear an evil trad metal band with sometimes-castrato vocals.
