Top 10 Black Metal ALBUMS

whatever

everything beyond pressing record on a single tape recorder is "a studio trick"

you're probably right. it just sounds blatantly abrasive as humanly possible. like a bad joke.

if they had recorded it in the forest under a funeral moon with a blaze in the northern sky and a nightside eclipse whilst showing goat horns during the autumn aurora, then i'd forgive garm.

that being said, i like bergtatt

i'm going to say 1 album per band and something like this:

bathory "blood fire death"
burzum "hvis lyset tar oss"
mayhem "de mysteriis dom sathanas"
darkthrone "transilvanian hunger"
emperor "in the nightside eclipse"
forgotten woods "the curse of mankind"
nokturnal mortum "goat horns"
in the woods... "heart of the ages"
branikald "rdjandalir"
helheim "jormundgand" (let's call this black metal for simplicity's sake)

no vikingligr veldi?

To those who picked Master's Hammer - Ritual, it was just re-released through NWN! as a 4x Vinyl. I've actually not heard them myself strangely enough, and was planning on doing so with this re-release.

Ok, my list (very difficult to make a list of 10):

Bathory - Blood Fire Death
Bathory - Under the Sign of the Black Mark
Burzum - Det Som Engang Var
Burzum - Hvis Lyset Tar Oss
Branikald - Av Vinterkald (Or Forest s/t, As a Song in the Harvest of Grief)
Dissection - The Somberlain
Enslaved - Frost
Inquisition - Invoking the Majestic Throne of Satan
Mayhem - De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas
Peste Noire - La Sanie des siecles - Panegyrique de la degenerescence

Notes: I'm still not entirely happy with Attila's vocals on DMDS (sorry), but i've come to grips with the fact that Dead was not on this...and lets face it, the music itself is killer, so it's definitely one of the 10. If this was a thread about 10 essential BM albums though, I'd be Live in Leipzig. Studio album? No. Most essential though? Yep.

Blood Fire Death - call it thrash, call it black, call it black/thrash, call it proto black, I don't care, it's definitely on this list.

i tried branikald and couldnt get into it. ive got the first press of kveldulv for trade if anyone 's interested.

graveland - following the voice of blood
in the woods - heart of the ages
emperor - anthems
enslaved - vikingligr
fleurety - min tid skal komme

it's their only good release.

id probably throw in a summoning album and the fullmoon album as well. perhaps ceremony of opposites.

Dissection - Storm of the light's bane
Burzum - Hvis lyset tar oss
Mayhem - De mysteriis dom sathanas (I should listen to this more often)
Dawn - Slaughtersun (crown of the triarchy)
Immortal - At the heart of winter
Wolves in the throne room - Diadem of 12 stars

Those.
And I would add there:
Ulver - Bergtatt
Drudkh - Autumn Aurora
Negura Bunget - 'N Crugu Bradului
Windir - Likferd
Blut Aus Nord - The work which... (isn't their best, but still BM)
Wormphlegm - Tomb of the Ancient King
Katatonia - Dance of December Souls (yes it is!)

Not even Av Vinterkald, eh?

Probably wouldn't like Forest then, except for In The Flame of Glory.

Going to limit it to one album per band...

BATHORY - Bathory
BRANIKALD - Stormheit
BURZUM - Hvis Lyset Tar Oss
COUNTESS - The Book of the Heretic
DARKTHRONE - A Blaze in the Northern Sky
HIRILORN - Legends of Evil and Eternal Death
INQUISITION - Invoking the Majestic Throne of Satan
MAYHEM - De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas
MORRIGAN - Plague Waste and Death
UNGOD - Circle of the Seven Infernal Pacts

I'm not sure if I consider even that BM, but meh. Doesn't matter.

it's obviously and blatantly a black metal record right down to all the usual clichés, i don't know what you are talking about

but who cares

Hm, well I don't particularly feel like the music itself is BM, but then again, I don't believe it's Doom/Death, so there really isn't any point I'm trying to make. Perhaps it is the elements of all three.

The vocals certainly concede your point, as well as the cliches you mention.. Jonas naming himself "Lord Seth", the corpsepaint, and the Satanic/anti-god lyrics. I don't know. Like we both already said, doesn't even matter. :)

One per band, could be different on another day, etc.

Bathory - Under the Sign of the Black Mark
Mercyful Fate - Melissa
Venom - Black Metal
Hellhammer - Satanic Rites
Master's Hammer - Ritual
Tiamat - Sumerian Cry
Burzum - Hvis Lyset Tar Oss
Mayhem - De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas
Darkthrone - Under a Funeral Moon
Beherit - Drawing Down the Moon
