Sadness Will Prevail is FLAWLESS VICTORY. I think I've only made it through the entire album in it's entirety a handful of times though.

I agree.

It's one of those albums that are impossible to endure listening all at once, but if you can, it's goddamn rewarding.

10/10 if you listen to it all at once, less otherwise.

I think COLLECTIVELY we are saying that these are all must have albums (outside of the "usual suspects") so anybody dismissing a particular band/album is in the minority (FWIW).
When you made this a sticky, you probably should have locked the thread. We all got to have our say so when we voted on this poll.

OK in receiving several e-mails, PMs, and in reference to a few posts here, I'll restick a new thread with the same list and LOCK it.

Of course this list will remain unstuck and open for more comments/flames.

Everyone wins.

lol

i can't believe people are getting seriously ticked off by this haha

it's a thread on the internet people

p.s. morningrise suxx

OK so now it's a discussion thread.

Let me ask the obvious question then: what is it about Morningrise that some people don't like? I know NAD thinks it's boring, and he backs it up by suggesting other Opeth albums as a reference for what Morningrise could or should have been.

So, for anyone else, should Opeth (the band) not have been shortlisted?

If you're ok with Opeth being shortlisted, then which album of theirs do you think provides better representation?

Conversely, (and because it always ends up Opeth vs Bathory, haha) I can totally see where the Bathory bashing might come from: vocals, simplistic riffing, 'basic' lyrics...I guess my point is that the Opeth *perceived* weaknesses aren't so obvious.

I like it, I just enjoy claiming it sucks because it gets people's panties in a twist

It's definitely Opeth's best album, less of a patchwork than Orchid and less SHIT than My Arms Your Hearse

Also ugh Bathory (Hammerheart, Twilight) is simplistic? Funny, that, because I thought they pulled off narrative song structures and epic scope far better than Opeth could ever DREAM of doing, eh.

Yes, but NAD finds Nokturnal Mortum boring. :tickled:

Well, I was playing devil's advocate (as you probably guessed), but I can TOTALLY see where other people could dismiss Bathory in an absolute instant, and if it's at any particular attribute, it's the vocals.

Probably, but funnily enough that's where most people dismiss Opeth as well; most people that like Opeth now come from a background of either prog metal or mallcore/metalcore -- these people tend to be afraid of growls. It would really be a smart business move by Opeth to drop them completely
