I remember that. I think it was decided that Immortal technically actually only ever released 1 BM album (the debut).

And also, when you take all the ingredients required to decide whether something is BM or not, Deicide fit the bill in terms of 1st wave blah blah. If Venom makes the cut, anyone can.

Changing the definition of something is not really a new fact. Venom - Black Metal is as much a Black Metal album now as it was then. Of course, Venom is not solely (though it is wholly) Black Metal.
