Your Top X of 2008?

Thothcover.jpg

A Darken side project with some dude from Ohtar and another from Dark Fury. Must hear this!

leviathan - massive conspiracy against all life
nachtmystium - assassins
winterfylleth - the ghost of heritage
the devil's blood - come, reap

that's really all i can think of...still have yet to check out 2008 releases from cynic, psycroptic, agalloch, october falls and krallice though

i feel like this was sort of a slow year, i recall a lot more exciting shit coming out in 2007...hopefully in 2009 as well

There's so much stuff that I dont have yet. but im enjoying these.
Heimdalls Wacht - Ut de graute olle Tied - Deel I
Forefather - Steadfast
Arghoslent - Hornets
Obtest - Gyvybës Medis
Odal - Zornes Heimat

1. Death In June - The Rule of Thirds
2. Agalloch - The White EP
3. Rome - Masse Mensch Material
4. Werkraum - Early Love Music
5. Deathspell Omega - Chaining the Katechon
6. Havoc Unit - H.IV+

I'm afraid I haven't heard too many 2008 releases this year.

My pretty much finalized list:

1. Darkestrah - The Great Silk Road
2. Arghoslent - Hornets of the Pogrom
3. Zero Hour - Dark Deceiver
4. Taake - Taake
5. Manilla Road - Voyager
6. Absurd/Grand Belial's Key/Sigrblot - Weltenfeind (Grand Belial's Key's section wasn't that good, but Absurd and Sigrblot more than made up for it)
7. Agalloch - The White EP
8. Ariged L'amh - Ode To Salvation
9. Darkthrone - Dark Thrones and Black Flags
10. Death In June - The Rule of Thirds

Granted, there are a ton of albums on my "to buy" list that I honestly didn't even notice coming out (if they even did). Gonna have to double check what came out and what didn't.

I'm going to have to go back and listen to Agalloch's The White EP. I listened to it once, on the car stereo, and pretty much found it insufferable, recording studio masturbation. Perhaps on headphones I'll come away with a different vibe.

Other than "Blue Lambency Downward" and Fleet Foxes (pop), I've probably heard exactly 0 albums from 2008. And I don't care.

I'm still stuck in 1968.

Uh, let's try this. Falloff from the top is fairly rapid.

1. Eternal Deformity - Frozen Circus
2. Iced Earth - The Crucible of Man
3. Russian Circles - Station
4. Misanthrope - IrremeDIABLE
5. The Dresden Dolls - No, Virginia
6. Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!!
7. Metsatoll - Iivakivi
8. Transit - Decent Man on a Desparate Moon
9. Dornenreich - In Luft Geritzt
10. Warrel Dane - Praises to the War Machine

Hmmm.... surprised neither Primordial or Ihsahn are on your list Neil.

I know of your past fondness for all things Misanthrope, but what's Eternal Deformity like? (I'm going to assume some type of avant-garde, but is it played in a softer or more aggressive manner?) Obviously that one jumped right out given its status on your list.

My top 10 list is still a mess, but to tide you over, here's a worst 5:

1. Into Eternity-The Incurable Tragedy
Complete letdown and just plain predictable.

2. Dragonforce-Ultra Beatdown
When is this band going to release a new album?

3. Artas-The Healing
Sung in three different languages, you would think it would be more than just run of the mill metalcore.

4. Iced Earth-The Crucible of Man
The much hyped return of Matt Barlow plus the great live sets don't do much for a lukewarm album.

5. Children of Bodom-Blooddrunk
Here because it is the definition of average.

I think I pretty much have a top 1 of this year.. haven't heard much and the only thing that keeps me coming back is

Ogre - Plague of the Planet

Hmmm.... surprised neither Primordial or Ihsahn are on your list Neil.

Hmm, I don't think I've even listened to the Ihsahn. Heard some good stuff about it, but I was pretty underwhelmed by his first one, which I also heard good stuff about.

I know of your past fondness for all things Misanthrope

Which is why I'm especially fond of the new Misanthrope! Because it sounds much more like past Misanthrope, good and pompous and French, and not trying to be dumb and gay and Gothenburgian.

but what's Eternal Deformity like? (I'm going to assume some type of avant-garde, but is it played in a softer or more aggressive manner?) Obviously that one jumped right out given its status on your list.

I probably put it up there just for that reason, to give it some publicity. Because it's not an all-time classic or anything (haven't found any of those from 2008 yet), but it's really good. It's sort of like Arcturus, mixed with a little Riverside. Well, I probably just mention Riverside because both bands are Polish, and ED's clean vocals have that same "I'm not trying too hard but you can still hear that I'm sad because I'm Polish" voice. Just really top-notch songwriting and execution, which is amazing for a band with five albums that no one has ever heard of. Perhaps a bit too straight and clean for the RC core, but sometimes a little polish (lollerific pun intended!) is nice.

He played here in SF a few months ago... I chose a bad night to contract food poisoning. :erk:

Oof, yeah, bad timing. He played two nights here in Chicago, though I only went to one. It was pretty great. I'm a big fan of the more melodic and pompous side of Nick Cave ('Abattoir/Lyre' especially), and now that he's back in sweaty rock-your-balls-off mode, that meant we didn't get much of that, but I also can't complain too much about getting a bunch of old sweaty rock-your-balls-off songs.
