2003 still rules.

Europe (the self-titled debut album is a fantastic slab of early metal).
I do concur.

John Norum is a guitar wizard, and any album that features a song ("Seven Doors Hotel") about Lucio Fulci's The Beyond is always cool in my book.

Heh, well, I do believe in what I said, I wasn't just trying to save face by putting down lame hair metal or anything like that. I really have no interest the way I used to in, say, Bon Jovi, Poison, Cinderella (though the first one still rocks), Warrant, Winger, Y&T, Danger Danger, and buckets and buckets more in that vein.

Some of the bands that I do still like and have much respect for include: Dokken (Beast From The East and backwards), Ratt (particularly though Dancing Undercover), Europe (the self-titled debut album is a fantastic slab of early metal), Def Leppard (Pretty much Hysteria and backwards - the albums On Through The Night, High 'N Dry and Pyromania rule), Kingdom Come (sue me, I love the Zepplinesque style), Skid Row (Slave to the Grind rules!) and the extremely underrated White Lion (love every album). While all of these bands had songs that could be considered "cheesy" at times, I really feel these bands had something extra to offer that to me showed both maturity and integrity and not just a "playing the style to cash in on its popularity" mentality.
Heh heh, good stuff. You named some bands I forgot about! For shame though, calling Yesterday & Today hair metal!

And don't forget Motley Crue. They pwned us all.

Heh, ok, Y&T was a bit of a stretch. Their early platters offer up some fine classic rock, but man, any band that creates a song as supremely lame as "Summertime Girls" deserves to be branded. Geez, 19 years later and I'm still trying to get that song out of my head.

Yep, the Crue definitely had their moments as well. Too Fast For Love and Shout At The Devil had some killer songs. I kinda lost interest after the whole partying "Smokin' In The Boys Room" "Home Sweet Home" era onward. 'Wild Side', however, is a resident cool cut off of GGG.

One semester of college in the midewest = $1,000 or so for tuition.

One semester of college in California = $10,000 or so for tuition.

THAT is why so many students don't have to work during school in the midwest. I worked during the summers and saved enought to pay for a year of college. Lots of people did that. THAT'S why going to the bars in college was so much fun. EVERYBODY was there, and EVERYBODY could afford it.

That's bullshit, it only costs that much for 2.0 GPA students who are too good for "lesser" universities. My whole collegiate career cost my under $10k, books included. I also went to a state school. :) Go CSU San Bernardino, the murder capital county of the country!!! :erk:

That's probably true, but assuming you want to go to the best University in the state, my figures were probably a little more accurate. Not like I care where anybody goes to college. I was just trying to establish why so many people didn't work in college. I actually made money (small amounts here and there) from a band I was in.

a semester for me was around $1200, no lie. I didn't attend a high ranking Texas school like UT or A&M, which is why my parents could afford it, and I didn't have to work.

And also because my fraternity house rent was only $250 a month, all bills paid.

Woah. I didn't have a single semester that cost less than $10K. Stupid private colleges. GRRR.

is it really the Murder Capital?
It was a few years ago, by volume. It's also the largest county in the US if I'm not mistaken, and due to all the meth labs in the middle of nowhere, it's not too surprising. I'm trying to find statistics right now to make sure I'm not fibbin' but so far am coming up empty. D'oh.

Cal State Universities will run you around $700 / quarter + books, and University of California schools go for around $2000 / quarter. Or you can go to USC for $20k+ / year and pay for your grades instead of earning them.

My rant was kinda directed at my girlfriend's brother, who was "too good for a state school" so went to a more expensive college and graduated with around a 2.0 GPA. He's also a lazy sod, but that's another story. :)

Yeah, and it started off me proclaiming 2003 to still rule. :loco:

Welcome to Short Attention Span Theatre!!!

Someone buy me a Phd please :erk: I don't fancy doing schoolwork for another 3/4 years of my life and having to pay top-up fees for the pleasure of it...

Bump. I'm STILL finding new CDs from 2003 that fucking own. Case in point, The Mars Volta, which I finally heard last night. They kick ass!

Also it looks like I didn't mention Kayo Dot in this thread, even though I got that album in 2003 I didn't realize its brilliance until this year. Choirs of the Eye is the only perfect 10/10 from last year, and that's saying something.

I just got the following 2003 releases:

The Mars Volta - "De-Loused in the Comatorium"
Green Carnation - "A Blessing in Disguise"

I am going through the album for the first time right now.... never heard it before but bought it today on a whim (it was only 8.88 USD new!)

This album is nothing short of incredible... and I love the guy's voice too...
