Here's something pretty fascinating. I've heard that almost every country, no matter how small, in itself has more dialects than ex-colonial countries like the US, Canada, Australia etc. Due to the way settlers arrived to the colonies, the dialect continuums have been stretched out into large areas instead of splitting up into small parts.

That's probably true. Consider the stupidly wide variety in British accents than USA.

The only Americans I can't understand are people in Louisiana who speak the funky Creole or have extreme drawls. Not Nawlins accents, those are fine/easy to understand.
