AE's Nebula thread (samples, tests, etc)

Maybe some of those V30 cabs with different mic positions (similar to Andy style with 57), and using a few different power amps. Maybe even through a solid state power amp to leave the preamp signal uncoloured?

Some great stuff here the last couple of days. Thanks for posting all the clips and impulses, I'll be doing some of my own as soon as time permits as well.

ah, would love to try that Sonic Maximizer.. BDDI would be awesome as well..!

Here's one I posted in the other thread, but here it is again if any of you missed it:

Ok so I've just done a test with reamping some Peavey 6505 tracks (you'll be familiar with em, Marcus) I've got on hand both through my favourite of Marcus' impulses (SM-57 On Axis 2 More Presence) and through two of the Nebula impulses he put up.

Original impulse: http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/285689/Nebula/81-impulse.mp3
Marcus' Original Nebula Program: http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/285689/Nebula/81-nebula-1-orange.mp3
Marcus' Second Set of Nebula Programs, Red Channel: http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/285689/Nebula/81-nebula-3-red.mp3

The only thing I altered about the Nebula ones when loading in is changing the pad setting to get them to the same level as the normal impulse. They were very low in level.

So I suppose the logical question is, why do the Nebula ones sound so bad? Is it because I'm using Nebula 2? Is there some magical 'dry/wet' setting I'm missing? (hard to tell because the UI is almost completely black and unlabeled).

PS. Here's one with AE's Nebula Program: http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/285689/Nebula/81-nebula-ae-1960a.mp3

I think it is safe to say that every single clip sounds weird so far. Whatever it is, somethings wrong.

Marcus, can't you record your mic/cab tone with your mesa and do a shootout with nebula with the same settings?

Ermin, yeah, I hear what you mean, it's not really fizziness but a sort of...crispness? I dunno, I thought it sounded pretty sweet in a mix, but solo'd I agree it's a bit much. Bernhard, I'll get to it! :)

Harmonically these are makin' mah baws full ta burstin. Can there be a significant difference in that department between the number of kernels, clean reverb setting vs distorted guitar, or maybe even length of sine sweeps?

Just hypothesizing here. Or maybe even taking a bit off the high end in the sine sweep; because at least to my way of thinking a sine sweep would hit every hertz of sound evenly, while a guitar signal would only hit those accordingly to the note played and never evenly balanced. Thinking way out of the box here....perhaps a CurveEQ of dry guitar signal, sine wave sweep to match?

Interesting idea dude, though one kicker is you can't edit the sine sweeps or anything in Nat - it generates them and then plays 'em back for the sampling by itself. I don't think I'd wanna mess with that, though, but rather just low-pass the tracks...

^ Agreed. Emulating the cab as close as possible was why we attempted the move over to Nebula in the first place.

So far impulses are giving me better tones, but my mind is still open. There could be unknown factors at play that we aren't seeing.

The answer to these questions is yes, without a doubt. My MD421 samples attest to this.

You can't edit the sine sweep, but you CAN edit the record .wav files, and the deconvolve them in offline mode.

Also consider that everyone (especially myself) who has posted a sample COULD just mix their guitars differently. I also don't know how to mic a cab like a superstar.

Got four more for you guys. I used my 1960B this time, too.

-1960A, SPUTNIK, Off-axis, 5in back
-1960A, SPUTNIK, 6L6 power tubes
-1960B, SPUTNIK, 6L6
-1960B, E906, 6L6

Also, concerning several ideas:

-I like the idea of a solid state power amp. That could be very interesting.
-I'll certainly get some different cabs/speakers to try, but I have no idea when.
-I can't get that Sansamp. We don't carry it. :(
