Mike was quoted before GR came out saying he'd like the next album to be a 45 minute continuous black metal song (or something like that). It clearly couldnt have been any further from that if it was a Bon Jovi album.
It actually reminded me a lot of Metallica before St Anger came out, giving it "This is a return to our roots, this is true metal", when in fact it was a horrible pile of smelly dogshit.

My questions are these: Why didn't Opeth do a 45 minute black metal song, will they ever do that, and if not - why do bands say they're doing what the fans want and then do something completely different?

BTW - to anyone that says "Fuck off, no one wanted a 45 minute BM song you headcase", if you were around this forum at the time you'd know most fans at that time were thinking and saying it was a fantastic idea. So don't shoot me down without understanding that.

What does a sense of humour have to do with anything? And I'm not saying GR ISN'T a good album.
I'm just asking why bands say they'll be doing one thing (normally a "heavy" type album) then do something completely different. That's it. No judgements from me.

That comment was probably due to some people questioning Opeth's direction after Damnation. Personally, the thought of simply another "black metal album" seems sort of boring to me. Opeth are in a league of their own now, they shouldn't be taking steps backwards to the good ole days just to please some old fans.

I just think it`s a missunderstanding by the fans. Mike told us it would be cool to make something like black metal but in an Opethian way.

The result is Ghost Reveries. An album with ghosts and such.

What a person say and how others take it may be the big factor in this drama.

'Cause it's funny to see who'll actaully believe them. Besides it might have started off like that, or it means you don't have to keep saying "Well the albums going to be a sort of like this meets that with a little bit of whatever", it just means when someone interviewer says "So I've heard the next album's going to be one massive 45 minute black metal song" you can just go "...yea".

Why do you care? Do you feel you were lied to or something?

Simply another black metal album?
Could you point out the black metal albums the band have already done? Cos I dont think they've ever made a BM album, which is why people were excited at the thought.
It's hardly a step backwards to go to a genre they've never touched before.

I'm not, i'm just giving my two cents because that's what you asked for mate.

And there's really no need to be cheeky now is there?

I'm not being cheeky, you're not giving your opinion. You're telling me how it is, as though I'm some twat and you know the score and I don't. I've read your other posts and I can see you're alright, but in this thread I don't think you know what I'm talking about and you're coming across as being patronizing.
I was putting across my two cents and you're attempting to shoot me down without ever addressing the original question - simple fact is, you CAN'T address the question because you don't know the answer.

Alright fair do's. Me second post yea, those three possible reasons I gave right? Well persoanlly I reckon it was done for one or more of those reasons. More over I reckon one or more of those reasons is why the same thing occurs with other bands, e.g Metallica's St Anger. Although for some reason I still like that album, possibly because I never though Metallica were great to begin with.

I'm not in touch with the band and neither are you apart from on here (which is all too sporadic), so your guess is as good as mine.

You watching Mexico - Angola?

Opeth never ever wrote black metal material, and they'll obviously never will.
Now, to answer your question "I'm just asking why bands say they'll be doing one thing (normally a "heavy" type album) then do something completely different?", I have no clue at all.

Show us the quote please..... "Or something like that" doesn't work as a basis for an argument.... and unfortunately without it the thread explodes on liftoff. I don't recall any such statement. I have read many times that he was thinking about having a record w/ an Occult theme.. and GR does.

And as an FYI...

From here:

HM: I`ve heard you`ve been having a few ideas for the next album. An epic, occultist, darker concept album was on your mind last I heard. There was also some mention of Celtic Frost influence, as well as Gregorian Chanting. Have any of these ideas solidified in your song writing yet? How much has been written so far, and in what direction?

Mikael: Haha, yes, that was said after I`ve written this certain part that sounded a bit like Celtic frost, after it came a mellow part with Gregorian chant style vocals. I`ll say these things for the people to have something to talk about. People probably think that that`s what the next album will be like as a whole.Obviously that`s not true, and I don`t really know myself yet. I`m working on maybe 4 different songs right now and all I know is that it`s gonna be great!

So there you go. Next?

For the 10 million times, Metallica never said that St Anger was a return to their roots, it is a global fantasy, an urband legend, something than most people wanted so much that they invented the quote.
It would be quite interesting to analyse sociologically though.

The obligatary comment to say bout your latest album whan you are a metal band :

It s more heavy and brutal.
