I'm saying it's nearly pointless for a modern dm band (opeth) to cover a song by another modern dm band (swallow the sun), how much can they really do with it

Opeth aren't a DM band, modern or otherwise.

If they were to do a cover of a Death song I'd go for "Pull the Plug" or "Open Casket", simply because I fucking love those songs!

They are and aren't a Death metal band, on the one hand they are but their music is convoluted to a degree where it could be considered something more. On the other their a prog band with a lot of death metal influence.

This arguement is as old as My Arms Your Hearse.
