Bands pretending their next album will be great

... people here are such twats...

Interesting thread Stormwatch. I doubt anyone here knows the answer (well, the replies so far have proved that) but it would be very interesting if Mike could explain why they took the path they did. Maybe his initial comment was just a joke to throw people off, i don't know? But I agree, it would be nice if artists decide to make those comments and then do something completely different would explain themselves afterwards. I mean, I can imagine someone into black metal who decided to buy Ghost Reveries on the basis of Mike's comments being extremely disappointed as to what he got if he hadn't heard it beforehand. Then again, it was just a little comment, maybe people shouldn't take it so seriously. But its definitely a question worth asking... I mean in most countries when you sell something telling them its something else that's breach of contract - maybe the same should apply for music.

This is ridiculous. Opeth makes music for themselves, not for fans. The claim that they should explain themselves to us is absolutely laughable. Don't expect, just listen to the album and enjoy it for fucks sake.

I couldn't care less who or what they make music for. If they are going to make comments which aren't backed up then for fuck's sake explain why they weren't. This should be even more evident to someone fronting a popular band with thousands of fans WHO PUT THE BAND WHERE THEY ARE NOW. It's got nothing to do with why they make music, and it's got everything to do with what sensible people do in real life. If i'm selling a product I don't make false representations which might mislead the buyer. This is customary almost everywhere and it's also common to the commercial law of most jurisdictions.

Actually I believe the original quote from Mike, from several different sources, was that he had intentions to write two 30-minute long black metal opuses.

Thats the quote I was trying to remember, but it was so long ago I just remembered the word "occult" and the two 30 minutes songs thanks for clearing that up Oinkness.

Exactly!

I remember Mikael saying on the Lamentations DVD that he found the riffs he played on Orchid and Morningrise sort of "boring". I think that comment tells you something about where Opeth's musical direction is going, and I don't think it is back to the "Swedish" riff kind of thing. However, it wouldn't surpise me if Opeth recorded something very interesting next time, perhaps even an album that has a more black metal feel to it, with prog and death elements intermingled into a fine soup...we'll see of course.

Well... you obviously had time to create a thread based on a premise that doesn't exist..... and then reply to it and other threads several times... so YES, I think you have time to waste answering "my shit".... which is actually "your shit" since I just asked you to show me what the hell you're talking about. Perhaps you should have addressed the thread to "Only true Opeth fans who were here to read a comment I think Mike made which I cannot quote but you must know what I'm talking about".

The rest of your reply is so retarded I'm not going to even address it.

Comedy.

Stormfart you got pwned.

How about reading all the interviews and stuff he said rather than a couple loose comments on a DVD?

It certainly wasn't like they said it was going to be a black metal, then a couple years later released GR with no warning. In that huge gap they did mention what the album was turning out like in various interviews and whatnot, so if it was a shock to you maybe its your own fault for not keeping up?

Stormwatch, I may be new and you may have been here a lot longer, but you're still being an asshole, you're reacting badly to people who are simply asking you to quote your source, and in general being a dick to everyone who speaks opposite of you.

I remember in Lamentations Mikael saying something about wanting to make a concept death/black metal album, but that didn't happen. And as a musician for almost 15 years now, I can certainly understand how you can say what you would like to make, but when you actually start writing and collaborating and doing that wonderful thing called making music, shit changes. Sounds and melodies happen that you hadn't intended on, and the music will generally shift directions.

It happens. I call it the evolution of music. You can have many ideas of what you would like to make, but until you sit down and really start writing, you'll never know exactly what is going to come out.

So chill out. Let people have opposing opinions, and let people challenge what you said without being an arrogant asshole and using your post count as a shield.
