Beer

christ. don't tell me those are all pilsners and macro or adjunct lagers.

having one of my favorite beers tonight:

Picked up a Sam Adams summer pack. First to try is the Latitude 48 IPA. Pretty standard IPA, tasty, refreshing but pretty smooth.

Pliny the Elder is probably my favorite beer. Pliny the Younger is even better, but since it's released only once a year, the availability factor knocks it down a few ranks for me

anything by Russian River is worth purchasing. Their sours are absolutely outstanding, with Supplication being my favorite.

I have a growler of Stone double dry hopped Ruination in my fridge right now. Delicious.

Zeph: It would probably aggravate you to know that Pliny the beer is commonly pronounced Ply-knee

Pliny the Elder was a Roman naturalist from the first century CE. I'm a classicist, in case I hadn't mentioned.

. Yes! Glad you enjoy russian river. I used to live in santa rosa so I was a frequent. Very awesome place and delicious beers! Cheers!

Yeah Russian River rocks, I had the fortune to snag a single sip of Pliny the Younger when they came to Redondo Beach this year and it was great. I also had Damnation which was awesome.

I'm jealous. One of these days I'm gonna make the drive up there to visit

over the weekend I was down in San Diego and visited Stone (for the billionth time) and Port Brewing/The Lost Abbey for the first time...nice place...good deals on their (usually expensive) beer

In Acton, ME this past weekend (+ most of this week but whatever), had a 22 oz. draft Allagash White. It cured my pre-meal heartburn. It could've been the salad, actually. Nah, must've been the beer.

Double post, yay. Just finished a bottle of Harpoon's Leviathan Quad. Not really a fan. Too boozy with an annoying raisin-y, prune taste (and a bizarre nose that smelled a little savory?). I'll gladly take a Belgian White/Wheat (unfiltered!) or even a Dubbel/Tripel over that shit any day. I'm already feeling a little buzzed off it (11.75%). Christ. Do not want.

New Belgium Mighty Arrow for me tonight. I think this is my favorite of their regular lineup. I like this way more than SNPA.

I finally got to have a Founders KBS sometime last week. It's pretty much worth the hype. Really good. I'd probably still take Bourbon County Stout over it, being much dryer and heavy in bourbon. KBS was fluffier and more chocolatey. Looking forward to the coffee BCS to be bottled again. I had it on tap two weeks ago and it was great. There were also cherry and ancho chile variants that were quite interesting. Goose Island is doing some crazy good stuff right now. I'm really not too concerned about their buyout at the moment.

I hate you MoL. KBS, Dark Lord and Kate the Great are all on my want list. I picked up two bottles of Goose Island Big John...haven't opened one yet. Hopefully since Anheuser-Busch bought them, we'll see more Goose Island stuff out here aside from the Belgian style ales.

V5: Quads are one of my favorite styles. Try Rochefort 10 or St Bernardus Abt 12. Either of those are outstanding, but some of the flavors you described are typical of the Quad style (pruney and sometimes overly boozy)

Belligerent: Mongo is outstanding. I had their 5th Anniversary DIPA over the weekend, and it was outstanding

As long as that Harpoon Leviathan is not indicative of how all quads are, I could give those a shot, but they're probably not on top of my list...seems like the two you listed are original, quality Trappist quads though so I'd be much more stoked to try those.

Yeah, but you have Russian River, which is basically the only stuff rated higher than the best of GI/3F/Founders that can't be had in Chicago. Well, I'll probably never have a Kate the Great either. There were a few times where one of the Three Floyds guys would bring a Dark Lord over to Metal Haven, back when that was around. We split bottles about 10-15 ways during the 10th anniversary and goodbye party. Dark Lord is great, but I would take KBS or BCS over it. I've also heard that some vintages of DL are a lot better than others. I feel like BCS doesn't really change year to year.

I wasn't wild about Big John. It sold out locally basically overnight, but I got some on draft the same night as the BCS variants. GI took over 25 unique taps at a bar within stumbling distance. It was great.

I think A-B will probably try to get GI's 312 and Honkers ale as the kinds of beers you find in every gas station next to SNPA and Boston Lager and Fat Tire. After that, I think they'll market Matilda and Sofie as accessible beers for the wine and cheese crowd. They were already in every major grocery store locally. Now they have display shelves with cheese coupons. I enjoy those beers a lot, so I have no problem at all with them being popular.

V5: You must try St. Bernardus 12 at some point. My favorite quad. Chimay Blue is another one to look out for.

Chimay...Those monks make damn good beer. I personally liked the Red more, but the blue is still a damn fine drink.

I just recently started getting into enjoying nice beer instead of drinking cheap crap...I dont like IPA's or anything too hoppy and bittery...So far Ive liked Delerium Tremmens, Brugse Zot, Fat Tire, New Castle, Blue Moon...

Can anyone reccomend anything along similar lines?
