Beer

I checked out some interesting beers that I thought I would share my thoughts on.

My favorite beer bar in Prague shared some Facebook picture of their new beers so I went there, simply because I knew that no other place in the city offers these.

The first one was Beavertown Lupuloid. It's their NE styled IPA full of hops. Good thing the bar owner really cares about the age of the beer and that Beavertown puts a CANNED ON data on the cans, that way you can be sure. This hop sensation was about a month old so I was very pleased. Hard to come across beers from abroad and so fresh.

Another one was To Ol Sur NEIPA, simply because I love that brewery and everything they do. The prices are higher so it's only once in a while kind of thing, but they're really something.

I also had an interesting Mikkeller beer at home, Spontandryhop Mosaic. I fucking love their sour shit, it's a shame the fruit lambic series is so damn fucking expensive.

Gonna post some pics from our brewday at the cottage. Supposed to be ale with quite a large portion of wheat malt inside, hopped only with Mosaic. Turned out very light though, somehow, too much water suddenly.

Anyways, here's some pics:

Grinding the malts:

This is what was used for sparging at the beginning.

That blue double spiral is for cooling down after the boil. Filling the fermentation "tank".

Fermentation, the fridge is set up to hold the correct temperature of 17,2C, there's a device inside collecting data on plato and other activity, sending it online.

Lost Abby Farmhouse Lager: Amber with half an inch of white head. Sour and funky scent of yeast and lemon. Clean, yeasty malts with with light hops and a slight sweet honeysuckle flavor. A little heavier body than your usual lager. Grade= A-

Victory Black Forest Stout with Cherry: Dark with small tan head. Smells smooth and chocolately and little tart. Taste is great. Excellent tart cherry flavor on the sides of the tongue and sharp dark chocolate finish. Strong carbonation. I love this beer. Grade= A

Beachwood Citraholic IPA: Classic amber with white head. Smells of ripe oranges with a hint of honey. A nice grainy texture that balances out the bitter orange/lemon flavor. I find the finish just a touch too sweet; it’s slightly cloying. Grade= B

A flight from when I went to Deschutes Brewery in Portland. Honestly wasn't blown away by this flight, considering how much I usually like their beer, until I got the last beer, Grapefruit Fusion Flower Session Sour, which was off the hook.

This looks really awesome, but the actual flavor doesn't match up with the hazy appearance. It's pretty good but the hazy IPA has been done way better. Sierra Nevada should stop coming out with a new IPA every week if they're going to play it so safe every time.

This is interesting to me because the fruit has quite a fresh flavor, which is pretty unusual for a sour beer. I could drink several of these in a row, so I wish that the four-packs were sold in Florida.

You should try and get some Amalgamator. Beachwood is my local brewery (I live 10 minutes away from them), and Amalgamator is one of my desert island beers. It's in my fridge every week.

Modern Times has opened their Dankness Dojo in downtown LA. I'm so fucking stoked to have a Modern Times location that's within an hour's drive (30 minutes on a good day!). Highland Park Brewery, another local favorite of mine, is opening their Chinatown location soon, and I'm SUPER stoked for that. It blows my mind how under-the-radar Highland Park flies (looking at you @TechnicalBarbarity haha)

Enjoying a kiwi saison by czech brewery Crazy Clown. You can notice my main female staring into void, sorting thoughts on my alcoholism.

Spent four days in Wroclaw and checked out several of their beers. Their game quality varies A LOT. A lot more than here. We had to pour some very promising-looking beers down the drain, but we also tried some of their barrel aged impstouts and they surpassed anything I've had from Czech Republic.

I focused on some local breweries, like Stu Mostów. I liked their strong witbier with orange peels added, but I had to pour out their DDH DIPA. I can't explain how it's possible but it was undrinkable. Probably infected bottle.

From what we tried, our favorite breweries were Browar Cztery Ściany and Browar Golem.

The barrel-aged imperial stouts that were really top of the Polish game were Samiec Alfa by Browar Artezan and Double Dybuk BBA by Browar Golem.

Dad was in England and brought me some beer back. I pretty much asked for the hyped NE-styled breweries and it was fucking worth it. Can't get thoswe around here, unfortunately. Northern Monk session IPA, could drink that forever.

Their pale ale, fucking beautiful.

And the winner of the evening: Cloudwater. If you can grab those anywhere, do not hesitate.

I'm drinking a Hungarian-Polish collaboration foreign extra stout with kapia peppers, black pepper, and coriander leaves. Your argument is invalid.

I've beer a huge fan of Gose Gone Wild for a long time, but this is my first time having this beer. This has a lot of what I love about Stillwater's "remixed" version, but it's definitely a standard gose. At 4% ABV, I could drink this all day. The salt and umami flavor profile is extremely well-balanced and quite refreshing.

I was initially skeptical of Crooked Stave venturing into things outside of sour and wild beers, but Trellis Buster convinced me that I was wrong to be concerned. This is a hazy NE-style IPA that uses some tropical hops. Amarillo, Azacca, Mosaic and Motueka are all present here. Despite the extensive hop bill, this beer falls in line with other hazy IPAs by being only moderately bitter and very juicy.

A bottle shop in Prague imported a big bunch of To Ol bottles, these might be the most exclusive I've had from the set:

Liquid Confidence. An impstout with three varieties of chillies. It was perfect. Ideal ABV, fudginess and nice heat. I want more but the price tag will probably stop me.

This is the coffee version of Jule Maelk. It was quite boozy and I think it would be better with 2 percent ABV less. It's a big beer, that's what it is. I'm looking forward to trying some more To Ol strong stouts. I'm planning a bigger haul but not sooner than late April as I'm leaving Prague now so I won't be able to pick them up.

P.S.: My table is not as clean as @Omni 's, sorry about that. :)

Need to get back into brewing. Sucks living in an apartment whose temperature fluctuates wildly

Yeah man, I wish I could do it at home. I can't for multiple reasons.

One of my best friends has begun home brewing in earnest this winter and the results have been piss poor. He's invested a lot of money into the equipment, but the methods need to be refined. HIs last batch - red ale - tasted like fermented oats and was stale as fuck. The ABV had to be through the roof because I finished the test pint and was buzzed as hell.

Seriously, I look at how much money he's put into it and I'd rather just use that money for actual beer.

That's kind of my logic. I'd rather spend an equal (or less) amount on beer by a brewery I like. The few times it's been cost-effective is when I've done a barleywine and imperial stout

I don't have enough time or motivation for homebrewing, because I doubt that I could make something anywhere close to as good as what I can buy in my favorite stores. The distribution for craft beer seems to be getting better all the time. I'd rather just keep drinking it.

These guys are absolutely killing it. I've had five of their IPAs so far, and all of them have been excellent. This one's super juicy and it's got a great amount of particulates. I'm looking forward to trying the next Decadent beers that come my way.
