Best of 2005 - new, old, on the fence, disappointing, and still to come

I'm not a huge fan but I'm fascinated by how Opeth is being slowly wound into Steven Wilson's web - he's an evil puppetmaster and Mikael is mesmerized.

I think people overstate that! But also, if you check the Opeth site, the last statement didn't mention Wilson being involved in the next album. I think they'll be recording/mixing/mastering while he's off on tour, so they'll either get someone else or do it themselves! I was hoping for Andy Sneap, we'll see...

Yes and yes. Also people should stop speculating about Opeth . We will see..

WOW ... Blabbermouth gave the new COC a 10 !!!
I don't think they ever bestowed that number on anything they reviewed.

Get ready, because to these ears, the guitar sound is similar to St. Anger, some of the vocals are too.
:ill:

I never understood the Metallica comparison with post-Blind COC. COC has such a blatant southern sound and influence, which is their biggest appeal to me. I've never heard any sort of southern influence in Metallica, maybe if you stretched the definition you could include a few Hammett's solos.

Guess I'll just wait and see how the new one fares.

I was listening to Deliverance this morning and realized that even the weakest song, Wreath, kicks an incredible amount of ass. That album is so hypnotic, if you just let yourself drift away to it, the genius is revealed. If you try and pick out all the seperate cut and paste sections like on Morningrise, or expect an album with 234905873409 riffs and no repetition, BZZT. You fail it.

God damn do I love that album.

EDIT: Not sure why I quoted you Dev, you said the word "Opeth" and that was good enough. :dopey:

Actually Deliverance is the only Opeth album who bores me most of the time , but I see why some people really like it. I still enjoy every other release , My arms being my fav.

As for the thread , I bought Lateralus which owns me . After all these years of Neurosis/Isis/Cult of Luna/Sigur Ros and post- music , I finally realize Tool is a great band (discovering them on my Opeth fanboy period does not help) . I don't dig APC , except Judith and a couple of songs in Mer de Noms.

Ocensize - Effloresce , Dredg , Massive Attack - Mezzanine , Kayo dot and non metal/rock stuff like In Slaughter Natives - Resurrection (amazing & terrifying record!) or Raison d'être are on heavy rotation .

2005 things I like : Primordial (a new brick to the wall) , Jesu (from time to time , even if it's marvellous) , New Blut Aus Nord mini cd and thats probably it..

Are you kidding me?? COC seems to be playing one big long version of "2x4," if that shit don't have southern boogie in it, I don't know what does... hell there quite a few songs in the last few years that have had mild southern influences as far as Metallica is concerned...

Great album, that breakdown in the title track is fucking unbeatable when you've just ripped your lungs on the bong. :Smug:

And Master's Apprentice is pure Morbid Angel worship.

That's your opinion. I love Deliverance as well, but Deliverance is "by the numbers" Opeth utilizing the same songwriting style showcased since My Arms, Your Hearse, though the title track is indeed mesmerizing. It doesn't hold a candle to the true genius and creativity displayed on Morningrise. Morningrise is on another plane of musical existence. My opinion.

FUCK , you post too fast

The riffs on Deliverance are overplayed by both guitars , so that some parts are rather "empty" or devoid of interest. I still can understand the praise for his album , there is an obvious technical feel , because of its more metal sound.

Yeah, I guess you're right. Although 2x4 is made so incredibly stiff by Newstead that I don't even consider it a boogie. :tickled:

Always like to see someone love Lateralus, so far my favorite album of this decade. APC is a different animal, other than Maynard's vocals there are near zero similarities. Of course even then, he uses a completely different style for both groups. I highly doubt APC would see Maynard doing a Ticks n' Leeches type delivery for example.

Agreed on all of that. I remember an interview (a very good one at that) that came out around that time, Mikael said that riff in Master's Apprentice is straight out of Morbid Angel. I know some fanboys deleted that part out of the song to "make the transition smooth." Come on man, that is weaaaaaaaaaaak.

I'm so glad Hugh Laurie is getting paid squillions to do a primetime US show like House. Great show too -- good to see people like this get some recognition.

Blackadder the Third > Blackadder goes Forth > second > first = (all genius)

Prince Regent rules supreme!

hey IoftheStorm, your avatar is Hugh Laurie, right? good one.

I absolutely worship "Blackadder Goes Forth."
Yes, the guy is a demi-god. I completely LOVE all Blackadder seasons, except the 1st one (just good).
You should see the third season, where Laurie plays Prince George of England, he is even better than in the 4th season.
