Best of 2006 so far

this Espers II cd is fucking amazing. I'm only on the 4th track and its clearly the best album I've heard this year...I haven't heard Ruun yet but I cant see how it could be better than this.

And did that last Katatonia album come out this year? I was really let down by that too even though most people liked it, it seemed like a lame version of Viva Emptiness. Novembre's effort really destroyed it while treading some of the same territory, and was even on the same label...too bad the katatonia album still got way more attention and praise.
i disagree completely. 'Materia' was my biggest disappointment this year while 'TGCD' is still my #1 (together with Madder Mortem)

TGCD is a grower. It felt a bit claustrophobic to me upon first listen, but it kept getting better.

I liked it immediately. It's become my default music choice these days. If I just can't decide what to listen to, I listen to TGCD. It's a bit more easily digestible and more able to be taken in piecemeal form than, say, Opeth, which requires a bit more of a time commitment and attention.

I haven't listened to the new madder mortem yet, maybe I should...my issue with their previous album was just that the songs tended to have very, very dull and repetitive riffs. Is the new one in the same style?

I thought the new novembre was possibly their worst album the first few times I listened to it and was really let down, then I realized that several of the songs just had maddeningly catchy and awesome riffs/melodies. Like the intro/chorus to memoria stoica, the intro/chorus to reason, the first half of aquamarine, most of comedia, the second half of materia, a bunch of the last two songs (which are actually novembrine waltz b-sides), etc. I think you'd probably like it if you listened to it a bit more, but who knows. My initial disappointment was largely due to the general lack of awesome drumming and growling, they toned things down.

My top five are....

Deluge Grander - August in the Urals
Karcius - Kaleidoscope
To-Mera - Transcendental
Wastefall - Self Exile
Hammers of Misfortune - Locust Years

I also like Materia better then TGCD...
Madder Mortem is better then both...

Ihsahn-The Adversary
Bal Sagoth-The Chthonic Chronicles
Keep Of Kallesin-Armada
Blind Guardian-A twist in the myth
Kalmah-The Black Waltz
Unexpect-In a flesh Aquarium
Deicide-The stench of redemption (this album is great)

You seen Zombi live? For some reason they are one of the best live bands I've seen. I really can't explain it but they just pull you in like few bands can.

I haven't heard everything but I sure like melodic pathos of Paatos...Silence of Another Kind...great riffs, beat, vibe, and vocals!!!!

I'll need to review what's been out, I'll need to take another look. But off the top of my head, I haven't listened to a new record as much as 'The Great Cold Distance', and I haven't enjoyed a record more than 'Eyes Open' by Snow Patrol. Got plenty records to check out still though. Very much looking forward to receiving my copy of 'Greenhillstairs' by Warped Memories.

Anybody 'round these parts heard the Burning Saviours, "Hundus?

I thought it was one of the top albums of the year for sure! Great, memorable songwriting and a total classic hardrock sound!

^whats the new KSE like nfu? im waiting for it to come into a shop near me (should be in a week or so) so i havent had a chance to hear it yet.

its great...as should be suspected. maybe a more consistant and varied album than the end of heartache too. some more traditional heavy metal type technique in it too, to give it some variety as well. theres only maybe 2 songs on the album which i would say are merely "good" instead of "fantastic" like the rest. which if you think about...is extremely satisfying and rare these days in metal. out of an 11 track album...

i can say most of those same qualities for the bullet for my valentine album too though. although theyre a bit more linear in some respects than kse.

I think that's exactly what the community needed.

I used to be a fan of Tool, 10,000 days came out and I became an even bigger fan. But, after about a week of listening to it and my friend constantly playing "The Pot" it began to wear old. This new album had extremely low replay value. Since its release (I got it prerelease) I have not touched the album once, I even lent (read: gave) all their other albums to my friend, because I douldn't bear to hear Maynard whining anymore. I suppose this album cemented them as a pretentious band that uses gimmicks rather than solid playing to entice fans.

Coming in 2014 The Artists Formerly Known as Tool's followup album to 10,000 Days! 26 tracks of Maynard singing in the shower, this epic work of genius is titled "Skrygwnä!ùtr." GET READY FOR THE ATTACK!
