Best of 2006 so far

I suppose this album cemented them as a pretentious band that uses gimmicks rather than solid playing to entice fans.

Gimmicks like what? I think the album has *very* solid playing. I've hardly listened to it since it came out either, but I liked it a lot upon coming back to it recently.

For me, the biggest pain in the ass is getting the cd out of the case :loco:

Agalloch - Ashes Against The Grain
Amplifier - The Insider
Bass Communion - Loss
Devin Townsend Band - Synchestra
Enslaved - Ruun
Isis - In Absence Of Truth
Katatonia - The Great Cold Distance

Pure Reason Revolution - The Dark Third
Thom Yorke - The Eraser / Spitting Feathers

I love plenty of music that's popular/all over the media right now, but this just does nothing for me. What do you like about it?

Hehe, I guess it's a personal thing. From my perogative, I just don't understand how anyone couldn't fall in love with this record. The song writing is strong, confident, consistent, varied, melodious, and often very touching. Gary's vox are very impressive, a huge improvement over their previous efforts. There are a lot of lyrical ideas that I like very much on the record, some of which I can relate to very strongly. I guess the sentiments that are dealt with are close to me. It has 2 songs on it that made me cry like a baby the first time I heard them - very few records can boast even one. It has Martha Wainwright on it, that's always a bonus for me. It's well mixed, it has a nice rich sound.

I don't know... from where I sit, I honestly can't fault it. It's just a 100% solid album for me. Even the weaker songs are good by most bands standards to my ears.

My top few are:
Anti-Flag - For Blood and Empire
Enslaved - Ruun
The Roots - Game Theory
Amon Amarth - With Oden on Our Side
Decapitated - Organic Hallucinosis
Dismember - The God that Never Was
