Like I said, I'd give the advantage to Black Metal. But that goes for the genre as a whole. I think more of my favorite bands are Death Metal bands, but if I could keep only one type, it would be Black. Also I think the Black metal scene is better. Its a more "Metal" atmosphere, if you will, with practically its own philosophy.

both death and black are to different to me to choose one. they are both great, really brutal and/or melodic and expressive.

If the pool were between one of them and other genre, they are going to win, but this is unfair.

i'm from Argentina, so excuse my english!!!

I prefer black metal! When I first started to get into music more extreme than Iron Maiden, Slayer etc. I started listening to death metal, but that only lasted aprox. 1/2 year, then I got tired of it. Luckily I got most of the Death metal stuff taped over, so I could erase it and the stuff I bought on cd I have sold. There are a couple of death metal tracks I like, such as "Dreaming in red" by Dismember and "Roswell 47" (+ the ballads on that record, which aren't death metal) and the Dark Tranquility record called "The gallery". I can find stuff that has death metal influences, but I wouldn't categorize as death, such as Opeth which is one of my favorite bands. The only thing that remains death in Opeth is the vocal, which is also clean half of the time. Naglfar (the swedish band), which is mostly black, but has a little death influence to them and Excidium; a Austrian band. I've only heard their record "Innocent River". I don't know if it's their only record, but it starts out pretty "deathy" with growls and stuff, but most of the record is more like metal-rock with clean vocals.
I think the reason why I got tired of death metal is that the music often focuses on heavyness instead of melody. Most riffs are played on a tuned down guitar in the first three frets on the low E-string. This is also why I think that "Diabolis in musica" and "God hates us all" by Slayer sucks. All their riffs are played that way and you get tired of it in no time. You can make a good riff that way, but I think all good riffs made that way are done. It's hard to make catchy riffs too if you only use the first 3 frets of the e-string. Not that it has to be Britney Spears-catchy, but a band like Opeth makes cathcy riffs and is still heavy and has a high quality-level. If I listen to more death metal I would of course be able to find some good stuff, but I don't have the time or will to look through 5.342.364 records to that find that one good record or song. Black metal can be tiresome too, especially stuff like Immortal and Marduk (who I both have records by) as it's just 200 mph more or less all the time. I prefer stuff like Opeth and Type O Negative and non-metal stuff like Lee Hazlewood and John Barry.

I don't death metal that's boring, which more or less means American death metal. Whatever you want to clasify Opeth as, that's my favorite genre of metal. Broadly, I'd prefer black, because of emperor and immortal, plus the fact that black is a more frequent source of comic relief

This post used to be a stool
I had an accident last night - this post isn't supposed to be here.
But now that it is:

Now the stool looks better (that is the right side of you-know what)
Not very smart trying to make make the whole thing in plain, unformatted html. Punish me!

MUHAHAHA.

doesn't even matter to me...
I usually listen to hybrids or bands mixing styles, creating their own sounds...
Some black metal is really good and some death metal is really good...

then again... some death and black metal is really bad...

I PREFER BLACK METAL, BUT DEATH IS VERY COOL TOO:grin: :D

i voted death metal , and as much as i love black metal (especially, gorgoroth, setherial, emperor, enslaved) .. it just doesnt get better for me than when those big chuggy guitars are going for it (ala dying fetus) or the intense double pedals are going, or blasts, or grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgrrgrrrgrrrrg ,,, although i prefer the black metal vocal ,,

ideal band ..

mad time signatures, with big chuggy guitars, and also black metal guitars, with deep and high vocals going together! .. :) .. not far off tangaroa really, musically anyways, . .

Nu-Metal!

All hail 2 chord progressions.
Also, using 7 strings even though you barely have enough skill to tune a 6 string.
Huzzah for the over the top, technical prowess that only Nu-Metal can showcase.
