Black Metal Survey!!!!

1.Most Influential Black Metal Band Ever?
Probably Bathory, but like many have said before me, Darkthrone has proven to be incredibly influential to many bands.

2.Most Overrated Black Metal band Ever?
Darkthrone. They're a decent listen, but I think they get WAY more credit than they really deserve because of their lack of substantial songwriting talent.

3.Most Underrated Black Metal Band ever?
I'm not really sure about this one, because most black metal bands seem to have a pretty even division between those who love and those who hate. At a stretch, I'd say Satyricon.

4.Greatest Black Metal Band To Ever "Sell Out"?
Dimmu Borgir.

5.Greatest Black Metal Band To Never "Sell Out"?
Probably Mayhem, though that's arguable.

6.Most Well Constructed Black Metal Band Ever?
Satyricon, because of their undying ability to write a great fucking black metal tune.

7.Greatest Black Metal Record Of All Time?
Either Emperor's "In the Nightside Eclipse" or Immortal's "Pure Holocaust".

8.First Black Metal Record Ever?
For the term? Venom's album. For the music? Bathory's s/t.

9.Greatest Mind In Black Metal?
I don't really know because I don't connect with the musicians much.

10.Greatest Musician In Black Metal?
That's really hard to answer, because there are great musicians in every subculture of black metal and it's hard to compare them objectively.

11.Best Black Metal Band At the Moment?
My favorite bands at the moment are Gorgoroth (specifically their first two albums), Immortal, and Emperor.

What is the point of all these damn survey threads? If people actually explained their answers these might be halfway interesting.

1.Most Influential Black Metal Band Ever?
Venom - "First", essentially responsible for the image, shock factor, bringing the raw DIY sound, and to a lesser extent musical influence, but that was more due to...
Bathory - Took everything Venom did but made it darker and more serious. Less rock and more cold minimalism; basically everything in modern black metal can be traced back to Bathory.

3.Most Underrated Black Metal Band ever?
I find Christ Agony gets very little recognition for their early work. Unholyunion is one of the first and best examples of classical influence on the genre. There are tons you could list, though.

4.Greatest Black Metal Band To Ever "Sell Out"?
Probably Gorgoroth, maybe Immortal or Emperor as well (taken to mean bands that were great before they sold out).

5.Greatest Black Metal Band To Never "Sell Out"?
The great ones all sell out eventually, it seems. I guess Burzum could be mentioned; Vikernes went crazy and quit the genre before he got the chance. Although we'll see what happens when he gets out.

7.Greatest Black Metal Record Of All Time?
In The Nightside Eclipse, De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas and Hvis Lyset Tar Oss about covers it I think.

8.First Black Metal Record Ever?
Technically Welcome to Hell, unless you want to count the Demon demo, but that was pretty much pure Motorhead worship and didn't have much in the way of occult themes. Archer had some nice vocals though.

9.Greatest Mind In Black Metal?
Darken, Vikernes, Ihsahn, maybe Mortiis (these guys are more interesting than "great minds"... I'm not sure metal has any of those).

10.Greatest Musician In Black Metal?
Ihsahn is pretty good, but does it matter?

11.Best Black Metal Band At the Moment?
Summoning, Крода and Drudkh all have that nice mix of artistic depth and mass appeal that I think will serve their legacies well. Personal favorites from the last few years would include Peste Noire, Ohtar, Kriegsgott, Iuvenes, Eternity, Enochian Crescent, The Meads Of Asphodel and the mighty Impaled Nazarene.
