Black Metal... why?

yah...so i was listening to "Inn i slottet fra droemmen" by burzum once, and experienced a wonderful revelation in my listening experience, which i have been able to apply to all music. i was listening to the repeating up and down minor third thing. (you can check it out on the anus.com samples) i was listening with the ear of my western/classically poisoned mind, hearing that interval, with the lower note being the tonic, or tonal center. then, something happened....i was delerious and dozing off, my mind switched modes, and the concept of a tonal center disappeared. if there was one, it seemed like a non-existent (but i sensed it) point between the two notes. it was a wonderful experience, and i have learned to apply that mode of listening to all music. thanks burzum.

i don't know wtf you are talkin about

Black metal iz a11 about teh balance between disharmonic misanthropic meanderings and enlighted descents into utter darkness which comprises of teh fascination with the demonic and occult and sings praises of teh satanic rites t0 break teh bonds of teh conformed masses

black metal fans are the biggest dorks I have ever seen honestly

the music is ok but does very little for me

concerning black metal, it was the most interesting thing i had on my mind at the time of the post. i know it doesn't lend itself to discussion...but, i thought i'd share, for whatever its worth. it created several lol's, didn't it?

I don't know about the black metal thing but the spelling of the as teh and own as pwn is about a juvenial as they come...why don't u fuckers grow up?:)

I remember listening to a lot of bathory, sodom and celtic frost when i was a teenager and liking it a lot. BUT, i dont remember anyone EVER calling them black metal at the time (just heavy metal) , so i find it funny / interesting when they are banded as BM these days.

I will concede that i really dont mind emperor but that is about as far as it goes for me *shrugs*

I don't recall anyone calling Sodom or Celtic Frost black metal... They are usually cited as influences of black metal, including early Bathory, Venom...

I did. First wave black metal would be a more specific term, though.

And it's still funny that a genre of music can cause this much animosity on a forum. A testimony to the age of most people here, I suppose.

It would be nice if the bickering had anything to do with Black Metal.

Oh, but it does. The central problem is that good black metal is about much more than the merely sonic- it is symbolic to the core. Those who try to strip it of this (to reduce it to the aesthetic) are oblivious to the work of the art.

this subject is of a value judgment. "what does one look for in art?" the symbolism of black metal is interesting. for some, the aesthetic is the art, or the product. the most important aesthetic is in the sound. not allowing other factors to interfere or influence is not being oblivious. once again, this depends on what you are looking for in art.

on the contrary, if an article about the meaning behind the shit production of black metal helps you enjoy the shit production of black metal, thats great.

but, one who knows nothing about the symbolism behind black metal is not necessarily missing the big picture.

No. "Art" is not a buffet of things one arbitrarily shops from ("looks for" or privileges). Art is not determined solely by the (its) audience.

What are you talking about? "Articles"? "shit production"? None of this is relevant in of itself. The art stands on its own, holistically.

but, one who knows nothing about the symbolism behind black metal is not necessarily missing the big picture.

The symbolism is not "behind", its what it is. The aesthetic is the vehicle. Truncating the work at the aesthetic level is to amputate from the art-work.
