Just wanted to share with you guys my thoughts on BNW.

I think i have this particular pattern whenever a new Maiden album comes out. The first few times i hear it, i think its the best thing since sliced bread, because its all shiny & new. Then once i get used to songs and can start singing along, absorbing the new sounds etc, i start to compare it to their classic albums from the 80's. That's usually when two things happen.

1) For nostalgic reasons, i don't think any album Maiden ever make will have the same magic to it as those albums that i grew up with while i was a teenager. I think that is simply because it's such a vital time in a persons life and all those memories come back et etc.

2) Musically, very often most bands best work is in their first decade. And really i think Maiden lost a step from NPFTD onwards. Now alot of that methinks is due to Adrian leaving and being replaced by Janick, but the production values seemed to take a downward spiral too.

However, over 2 years after BNW was released, I think it stands up very well against the best Maiden albums. It doesn't have the start-to-finish fire that Maiden albums had 80-84 and it'll never knock off SSOASS as my fave Maiden album, but i do think all of the songs on BNW are very, very good.

There was a period of time, maybe 4-6 months after it was released and we found out there would be no tour down here, i founf it very hard to listen to any Maiden albums, particularly BNW. But once i got over my tantrum, and started listening to it again i have found that its a damn fine album.

And i offer the following observations:

Production/Sound: Very, very good. I love the energy that is captured in the playing, Kevin Shirley excelled himself in that regard. I think there could have been perhaps a tad more guitar presence, considering there are 3 guitarist now. I guess id like to hear more of Adrian's ryhthm guitar work next album.

The Songs:
The Wickerman is that classic Maiden styled single with Adrian Smith on the writing credits- you know, The Flight Of Icarus, Can I Play With Madness etc. A great song, but given its simple nature not a song i want to hear flogged to death.

The Ghost of the Navigator - I love the intro to this song, but not so long ago that was where my affection ended for the song. BUT it has finally become a song that i like - and it would be a great song live.

Brave New World - i think this is a really good song, with the only negative being a somewhat overly repetetive chorus.

Blood Brothers - this seems to be a song so different from anything they've done before, but like TGOTN i really like it now. It has been a slow grower.

The Mercenary - a really rockin' song, and similar to the title track, my only complaint is that the chorus is too repetetive.

Dream Of Mirrors - Great song. A very progressive song, but with a fantastic chorus. Initially the intro to the song seemed awkward, but now i get it. The intro to that song, is really abrupt, just like when you wake suddenly from a dream.

The Fallen Angel - Another typical Adrian Smith co-written song, a great rocker.

The Nomad - I love this song, i don't have a problem with the lyrics as some people do. I love the guitar work from start to finish, the whole song in fact.

Out Of The Silent Planet, this is a fairly straight forward rocking song too and i love the chorus, but it does have a few progressive elements in it.

The Thin Line Between Love And Hate - For me this is the jewell of the album. I love Davey's driving riff for the first half of the song, and the second half, mostly instrumental with Bruce's awesome singing of the title is just so powerful. There seems to be alot of emotion in this song, and i really connect with it.

All in all i give the album 8.5 out 10. I deduct .5 for production, and 1 point for too many repetetive choruses.

Man of the Match: - Dave Murray. He co-wrote the 2 best songs on the album, The Nomad and The Thin Line... and the title track is great too.

So BNW is a great album IMO, and given that these guys are pushing 50 it's pretty incredible. I mean, they're not as heavy as they were, but there song writing has really matured in a good way and they still rock hard.

:headbang:

Up the Irons!

I agree in most. However, i don't think that Maiden really went downhill after H left, but then that's not something we're discussing here. I think that, musically, BWN is great. The songs are written fantastically, the vocals are great (although like you say, the choruses are a bit repetative from some songs), the guitar, bass and drums are all excellent. I also agree that there could have been more guitar, but i think the sounds are really good. It's also really tight, which is what you'd expect from a band that have been around for 25 years, i guess.

The Thin Line is DEFINATELY the best song on the album, imo. The Vocals are phenomenal, and the opening riff is great. It's a riff that really tells you about the song, i find. or maybe it's just i've heard the song so many times. The whole pregression of the song is excellent, and the music reallys shows the emotion and atmosphere of the song. i also like the little bit at the end. I'm glad they kept that in. Not sure exactly what it was nicko missed, but keeping it in kinda lets us (the fans) how happy they are to be back, and to have Bruce with them again. Maiden with Bruce and H were phenomenal in the 80's and with Janick as well i honestly believe they will be/are better.

Wickerman, GOTN, Blood Brothers and Fallen Angel are all unreal, Dream Of Mirrors is great, but a bit long, The Mercenary is ok too, the rest I can do without, but it was well worth buying and thats all you can ask for :D

I don't think it comes close to the 80s albums :(

Some songs are great, and there are lots of great parts, but they just get lost in all the crappy long drawn out parts. And the production is bad.

It isn't a bad album, I think its about on far with No Prayer and Fear Of The Dark. And I quite like them. But no way does it match the '80s albums or even come close...

I like most of the songs apart from The Mercenary and The Nomad. The others are all great, but a bit long and indulgent in spots. Also, Adrian should have written a *lot* more!

I still play BNW quite a bit even two years after the fact. It has a lot more staying power and consistency than some "comeback albums" I can think of.

Hahahaha

Oops. I accidently pressed on post reply instead of post new thread.
Dont I look like quite the fool?!?!

No, this is easily covered up................................................

Bon Jovi have a NEW studio album coming out soon. Maiden's last studio album had the word 'NEW' in the title............... coincidence??

OK, heres my take on BNW 2 years on. :)

I agree with alot of what Dave has said, but just want to add a few things. I think BNW has stood the test of time for me, and although it doesn't rate as fondly for me as some of their classic 80s stuff (NOTB, Powerslave, SIT..), I think it can be comfortably put ahead albums like FOTD, Killers, and perhaps even SSOASS.

Quick run down on songs:

TWM - excellent opener and first single from the album. Classic simple Maiden rocker. Who could ask for anything more.

GOTN - as Dave said, I think the intro to this song is incredible, and possibly the highlight of the album for me. The rest of the song is great too, but doesn't have the same power as the intro. Possibly due to the lyrics. Great song all the same.

BNW - excellent title track, with only ONE flaw, which almost ruins the whole song. Maiden and their damn repetitive choruses!! Could have been a classic, but turns out simply good.

BB - I almost see what Steve as trying to do with this song, but it didn't quite work IMO. HEAPS of potential in the song, but turned out long winded and a touch boring. Not a bad song to listen to once in a while though.

TM - could have been a great rocking filler track, but was ruined by the chorus....oh well....

DOM - The quality of the album picks back up here. I have always thought the intro took a bit away from the song at first, but now I have really grown to love the whole song.

FA - an excellent almost heavy rocker. This is what The Mercenary could have been.

Nomad - I can see why people may not like the lyrics in this song (CHEEEESE!!..), but how can you deny the brilliance of the music! IMO some of the best music Maiden have ever performed! Awesome stuff!

OOTSP - another personal favourite. Not quite sure why, but I just really like this song. :)

TTLBL&H - I will probably get rotten vegetabled thrown at me for this, but I think this is the most overated song on the album. Don't get me wrong, I think its great, but definately not the best song on the album. Just my opinion. :)

I think the production is good, but I would have enjoyed it more if it had some more guitar, and in particular, some heavier guitar in parts. Not right throughout the album, as I really like what they have done with some parts, but other parts would have worked better with more bottom end guitar IMO. The other BIG criticism I have is that it is just too short. I mean come on, the greatest metal band of the 80s has just reunited to record an album with all its greatest song writters, and each member only gets to write on a handful of songs each? They had no deadline or anything, so why not just kick back, let the creative juices flow, and come up with a double album? It might be just me, but one hour of music just doesn't seem like enough...

...though I guess, that would probably just be an invitation for Steve to drag out a few more choruses.

I think Nomad is awful. :)

I like the Mercenary, the only complaint I have with it is that the chorus is repeated too many times. "Show them no fear, show them no pain" or whatever should only be sung twice each chorus not 4 times. Great chorus though.

That song suffers from the same mistake as Angel & The Gambler imo, great chorus used too much. But nowhere near as badly as Angel..

Blitzkreig - i like your own mini review, some good points raised.

For the record let me say a few things -
1) SSOASS, Powerslave, Piece Of Mind and Beast are UNTOUCHABLE.

2) Brave New World is a great album, and i can listen to it regularly and still find new things about the songs that i enjoy - and that is what makes it a great album for me.

3) The Nomad ROCKS!!!

Moony, I don't believe we've had this conversation before, but I always skip past Nomad because it reminds me of Laurence of Arabia. Boring film= boring song :).

W

I am so angry right now that I really should take a couple of breaths, but I won't.

"Lawrence of Arabia" (note the W in "Lawrence") is one of the all-time greatest movies. It is not boring, it is awesome. It is perfect. It is a masterpiece and a work of art in every sense of the word. It is majestic, it is brilliant, it is amazing.

It is "Lawrence of Arabia", and I will not allow you to defile its great name by calling it 'boring'.

That is all.

Nomad should hereafter be referred to as "That Camel Song"... "Blood Brothers" is sentimental tripe, 'Mercenary" is generic, plodding 'metal' - the rest is good, OOTSP is brilliant! :)
