I just thought since it's coming up in a couple of days or so, I'd look to see who all is attending this Sunday. This is definitely one of the concerts I'm most looking towards this year thus far.

I would be curious if I knew what the hell BTBAM was or what it those upper case letters stand for! Info please...

Between The Buried and Me. Incredible musicians. Saw them in Atlanta back on the 9th. They were perfect, but I absolutely cannot stand their fans. I mainly went for Cynic, and was definitely pleased by them!

Oops. Sorry for not specifying but I thought most people knew. I'm curious since you already went metal messiah, how long did each band play? Did BTBAM play the new album start to finish? I wouldn't be surprised that their fans suck. They have a lot of that pure hardcore fandem, which is funny because they're getting further and further away from that with each album.

A lot of BtB&M's fans were asking "Why are they touring with THESE bands and not hardcore bands?"

They're trying to point themselves in a more progressive direction, musically and tour-wise, and for this they've really earned my respect. Incredible musicianship, too.....that whole night was a great talent showcase.

From what I remember they played mostly their proggy stuff. I think they only played one of their older straightforward, deathcore songs. I remember hearing "Alaska" "White Walls" "Ants of the Sky" "Obfusication" and "Swim to the Moon" but the rest all kinda just blended together cause Im not TOO familiar with their material. I would've liked to hear more from the new album though. Especially "Desert of Song" and "Fossil Genera"

But yeah... About those fans... lol Im still sore from getting stupid crowd surfers thrown on top of me. And fighting to keep my spot on the rail without crushing any ribs.

well, the reason they bring so many hardcore fans is that is the scene they started in when they were called PRAYER FOR CLEANSING. the hardcore scene is the one that will always embrace them and have been there since the beginning to watch them grow into the progressive beast they have become.

plus you also have to remember most of the members are straight-edge and vegan. so that too brings about a ton of support from the hardcore scene.

like i say if you don't like the pit stay out of the circle, but everyone needs a rowdy show once in awhile. i know i do.
:)

BTBAM has straightforward deathcore songs?????
News to me.

The crowd for the Atlanta show had a lot of bros. People were trying to mosh during Cynic, openly mocking them, etc. Sorry they didn't have enough half-assed At the Gates worship riffs with a generic breakdown thrown in.

Definitely true, and I completely agree. I probably wouldn't have gone if Cynic wasn't on the bill though. I made sure to get there early enough to get on the rail, so I wouldn't be stuck in the pit or the back of the room. My rowdy show for the year is gonna be Megadeth/Testament/Slayer whenever thats rescheduled.

who said Deathcore? there is a big difference between hardcore and deathcore. hardcore is not just a type of music but to many it's a lifestyle. but there are several tracks on their first album that could be considered "deathcore" by today's standards.

and yes, "bros" are quite annoying i must admit as my band brings out far too many at our shows and very few of them are actually "hardcore" people. i like to call them wannabees.

I'm really on the fence here as far as sitting on the side at HOB or in the pit. It probably depends on if I can get up front or not. I really don't want to deal with douches, especially if they're going to mosh to the other bands.

Metal Messiah did.
But even on their self-titled, they weren't doing the typical Suicide Silence stuff...they were doing interesting things, even then.
Believe me, I know all about hardcore. Within the past week I've seen Trapped Under Ice, Naysayer, Title Fight, Foundation, etc.

I don't mean "bros" as in people you'll see at a metalcore show, though. I mean the popped collar, Jersey Shore type people, haha.

well, i don't mean it like that but they did help influence bands like that, the new style has just reached the lowest common denominator. haha.

and the "bros" i was referring to wear athletic shorts and straight brimmed hats and any assortment of shirts they just picked up at the last show that they thought the bands breakdowns were "brootal"

I think what I meant was MORE straightforward than their newer material. I know it probably came out like I said it was straightforward, but I meant in comparison to the rest of their material. And like I said, Im not TOO familiar with their material. I haven't listened to the first two albums at all I don't think. So, when I heard that material live, it just bored me and I didn't really pay enough attention to notice anything special about it. But thats just me...

Man, you guys weren't wrong about BTBAM's fans being annoying. Were they ever at this show. Loved their set, but I was highly disappointed in how some were treating Cynic. There were a couple of booing from where I was, one obnoxiously screaming and a couple had their backs completely turned on them. Not to mention, this is probably the first show ever where I sort of did feel out of place, at least agewise and I'm only 25.

That said, the show as a whole performance-wise was great. Scale the Summit is good but I don't really want to see them again. I've seen them twice now and while I like their music, I find them to be a bore in a live setting. Devin Townsend on the other hand, totally BLEW ME AWAY!!! I've never seen him before outside of SYL at Ozzfest (where to be honest I thought was completely stupid at the time with the "You Suck" song) and that was before I listened to his solo stuff. In recent weeks I've been getting into him but HOLY CRAP!!!! Amazing performance, especially for only having 30 minutes of time. I sure as hell hope from what I heard from someone else that met him that he's doing a headlining tour because I would go to that in a second.

Cynic I loved. I was really disappointed when I didn't get to see them on Meshuggah's tour thanks to my stupidity of forgetting my ticket and it being sold out. Great stuff but it was a little weird for a metal band to be as laid back as they were with the yoga and everything. They still didn't deserve some of the treatment they got from the crowd.

BTBAM I thought were fantastic, though I would've liked them to have played the new album in full, but I can't complain. Plus, they probably don't want to do a full album on tour for two tours in a row. I'm glad I stayed back though because the crowd was absolutely nuts and in turn, very amusing to watch. Though, a fight did break out, which is always disappointing.

Anywhoo, to sum up great show. I wish Townsend had more time, but hopefully he headlines. He definitely was the highlight of the night for me.

Weird, I feel like we were at two different shows. I thought it was the most appreciative and respectful crowd of young kids I've *ever* seen at a show.

Understand, it was a sold-out show, with almost everyone there to see BTBAM. It doesn't matter who the headliner is, whether it's BTBAM or Barry Manilow; anytime you have a huge crowd of fanboys, there will always be some who aren't interested in the opening bands and will make their opinion known. That's just the nature of fandom.

Still, the only thing I heard during Cynic was a completely-understandable "what the fuck?" during one of new-age-philosophy voice-overs. Beyond that, I thought the crowd was incredibly appreciative of all 4 bands in the lineup, way moreso than a group of my peers would have been 15 years ago. Heck, at least half the crowd actually *did* the yoga-pose with Masvidal, for a band of old dudes who released their first album when most of them were still in diapers!

If you want an annoying fan, contrast that with the goose-stepping Nazi at Behemoth (minus Septic Flesh :() last night who was bowling people over and smashing through the non-mosh area. I was proud of the crowd though when they booed him down and then one hero got in his face which led to him being promptly booted from the show.

that fat nazi guy is at tons of shows. I was at Metal Haven once and he was there bragging about all the clubs he is banned from for fighting. This guy is a complete knuckledragger. Listening to him talk was amazing....I never truely heard someone so dumb try to explain thier actions. An yeah....he totally beleives in the old nazi ways too. He went on and on about it.
