Controversial opinions on metal

That being said, there were far worse bands than Manilla Road floating about. I'd still much rather listen to them than pretty much anything connected with "black metal".

I've never understood why Manilla Road and Cirith Ungol are so connected, other than the fact that they both play epic styles of metal and weren't well known in the 80s. Oh and they are both influenced by various 70s rock bands.

Not sure if controversial...

King of the Dead > Frost & Fire > other stuff by Cirith Ungol.

And, The Lamp of Thoth's cover of Frost and Fire is so much better than CU's version, it completely destroys it, imo... and yes, I like the original.

Depends for me, if I want something a little more real then I'll put on Frost and Fire, but if I want something epic then I'll put on King of the Dead

Down Among the Dead Men is the worst Slough Feg album I've heard (s/t, Twilight of the Idols, Atavism, about half of The Animal Spirits). Also Slough Feg is a joke in comparison to just about any Manilla Road album, which says more about Manilla Road than it does Slough Feg. TLOT's cover of Frost and Fire is not even in the same ballpark as Cirith Ungol's original. That's ridiculous.

I won't get into the DATDM argument, (though very briefly, claiming that DATDM is worse than Hardworlder might be a tough sell).

TLOT version of Frost and Fire adds a massive amount of gravity and weight to the already impressive original. I don't feel it is ridiculous, though as ever it was entertaining to read your point of view.

Like I said, DATDM is the worst Slough Feg album I've heard. I haven't heard Traveler, Hardworlder, Ape Uprising, and half of the newest album, but everything else I consider to be better. DATDM just seems overly ham-handed and 'obvious' if you understand what I mean. I don't pay too much attention to this band any more though either way, and if I ever listen to them it's almost always the self-titled.

Been listening to a good bit of Sabbath lately, and from these recent listenings I've decided that Bill Ward is the best drummer in metal.

He's just got such an uncanny sense of rhythm and this groove to his style that is uniquely him. Might not be anything special technically, but the man played such memorable drum lines.

And Mort is correct.

Protest the Hero are fucking awesome. Sorry if you disagree. Maybe you should listen to more monotone music with absolutely no progression of any sort that just plays the same riff for 10 minutes with some abysmal Ozzy Osbourne wannabe moaning cliched stalker lyrics, ok?

Protest the Hero wouldn't be bad actually, were it not for that fucking vocalist. If it didn't already sound like someone had done it already, I'd say I would nail his balls to a fencepost.

Their first,DATDM and Traveller are their best,I can't pick between them as far as to which one is best.DATDM is 'obvious' but at the time it was released there were very few bands attempting this style.

Actually, I will agree that DATDM does have some obvious moments; in particular the gonzoid "Heavy Metal Monk" seems overly worked and contrived, and that irritates me, though stellar tracks like "Sky Chariots" continue to elevate it to a "must-play" record.

@Dodens: I really would give Ape Uprising and Animal Spirits a listen, they're great records.

Ape Uprising is definitely the best of their 2000s albums. I think they really nailed it with that one. Really diverse, lovely warm production and simply great riffs. The Animal Spirits seems a bit rushed to me, none of the songs are especially memorable or catchy when compared with pretty much everything else they've done.

Traveller is by far their best in my eyes (or ears.)

It has what is their best song at least:

Scalzi though, that man has probably one of my favorite metal voices overall - even if the band he's in isn't quite as good as some others before them.

Traveler slays.

Down Among the Deadmen is my favorite (that I've heard) because of the fucking killer guitar harmonies and vocal melodies. The whole thing is just so catchy and badass. There might be a few tracks I skip over from time to time, but as a whole I just think it works so damn well.

Does anyone here have their self titled album,or have even heard it? I have it on vinyl and it slays, got it from Miskatonic but was only released in 500 copies,i've been after a cd copy for ages.
