Some of the stuff I've heard labeled as deathcore is literally pure modern death metal with breakdowns in the middle. The hardcore influence in a lot of *core is overstated.

Metalcore refers to any extreme metal genre combined with hardcore punk. Deathcore is a type of metalcore, but it is clearly closer to death metal. It has more "death" than "core".
