Controversial opinions on metal

You can't really go wrong with the first three records with Phil but I can understand why people wouldn't like anything after that. I like all the albums with Phil. I wish the ones with Terry Glaze would get reissued because I'd like to buy them.

Only Cowboys From Hell and Power Metal are real.

Cowboys from Hell is intermittently good, but too much second-rate thrash. Vulgar Display has better songs and a more realized sound, but the production is too lightweight and Pantera still wasn't quite there soundwise. I don't have much opinion on whether Far Beyond Driven is better than The Great Southern Trendkill, but they're both heavy as fuck and do Pantera the way I want it done.

Yeah, it's a shame they won't put out their early albums. They were independently released by the band I believe, which is probably why.

The reason I like The Great Southern Trendkill is probably the last 45 seconds of Floods and also Suicide Note Pt. I.

Second-rate my ass, almost nothing sounded like Cowboys or had that consistency and quality when it came out.

I'm not saying it's all meh thrash, but there's still too much of it. The first three songs, "Cemetery Gates" and a few others are totally solid, and there's nothing truly bad on there, but there's still filler and it's usually the more thrashy material.

The album gets a little slow with Clash with Reality/Medicine Man/Message in Blood all in a row, but whatevs. Most bands would be happy to have fillers like those.

Like I said, it's not a bad album by any means, it's just inferior to their next three and too much of a transitional album.

3rd rate would be more fitting. But a few generic as fuck thrash riffs does not make that album thrash imo. Its honestly pretty forgettable and almost unlistenable outside of a few tracks. Cemetery Gates is good ... Cowboys From Hell, The Sleep and Message in Blood are okay ... the rest of the album sucks hard.

Pantera's fans may be the worst of any metal band.

I can listen to Vulgar and Trendkill in low doses but they really arent for me.
