Cradle of Filth

Anthems has its good and bad moments, it's all about taste. But liking Cradle of Filth? That just automatically makes your opinion in any music-related conversation invalid on all accounts.

You are real moron :kickass:

But no, really, anyone who looks at the musical structure of their songs, what little of it there is, shouldn't have any problem figuring out the amount of shit they manage to cram in their music. It's like basic algebra, though I'm sure most would rather do basic algebra than listen to Dani Filth talk about how "kewl" stuff like evil wizards or hobbits that wet their panties.

Actually their earlier material is quite sophisticated in terms of structure. Bathory Aria anyone? And no Dani doesn't talk about evil wizards or hobbits. THat would be power metal.

the musical structure is anything but basic and the way that dani layers his vocals together is unparralled regardless of what you think of his actual singing voice. unfortunatly this can only be accomplished through studio magic.:erk:

Or quite a lot of "tr00" Black Metal

Have yet to try to listen to their earlier stuff.
Well that's the best stuff. The first four: Principle, Vempire, Dusk and Cruelty are all excellent. Midian is good too but much more "poppy" sounding.

Wow. I actually agree with most of what you say here. It's exactly because of the revolving door line-up that Cradle has lost so much ground. Had they kept Robin, Gian, Stuart, Lector and Nick they would most likely still be excellent.
ehh.. Though a decent guitarist, Gian wasn't much of a writing force, he was mostly into eating pizza and agreeing with anything that Dani said or did. He even came back and re-joined the "band" after being publicly fucking dismissed a year or so prior, just to get dismissed again a while later! And Lector was basically a classically-trained studio musician hired for Cruelty sessions who got hired for the tour as well. The main writers were always Stuart and Nick, and I believe that if at least those two guys were still around, maybe COF would still be a "listenable" experience.

I had to resurrect an old Cradle of Filth thread being that Darkly, Darkly, Venus Aversa will see its release date in a couple of days. But for the record, it has already been leaked.

Maybe it's just the first listen but it sounds pretty stale to me. I've been a fan for a long time and I honestly cannot say two albums in their discography sound alike, but this sounds almost like Godspeed b-sides. The symphonic element especially sounds recycled from Godspeed, and I'm not sure that the overall sound and production differs at all from that album.

No doubt their early works are superior to their last few in just about every regard, but I was expecting more. After all, Godspeed was a step back in the right direction after the embarrassing Thornography.

Dani hasn't written anything compelling lyrically since Damnation and a Day so I doubt knowing the lyrics will make a difference.

The only decent track maybe very well be "Forgive Me Father (I have Sinned)." A catchier song that's more in the vein of their Iron Maiden influenced stuff.

Midian was the last CoF album I liked. Nymphetamine made me decide to completely ignore them, so I haven't heard anything since. That being said, how similar to old school CoF is Godspeed?

I think Damnation and a Day was an excellent album, especially lyrically. That would be their last great album in my opinion.

I don't think Godspeed is anything like old Cradle of Filth. During promotion for this album, the band made it seem like it was going to be like their debut or like Cruelty but I don't think so. It mostly resembles bits from the three preceding albums but still stands on its own in Cradle of Filth's catalogue. It is one of Cradle's more aggressive albums, and it's got some really good moments on there. I think Cruelty and the Beast marked the end of the old school Cradle of Filth era.

I heard the new CoF single... man that shit was bad. Seriously.

"Forgive Me Father," the one they shot the video for? I think that song is alright overall, but it does have some nice parts. It's a bit of an oddity on the album but perhaps that's the reason why I believe its the best track the album has to offer.

I listened to the album again and I cannot believe how much it just sounds like Godspeed b-sides! The symphonic parts sound like they're there just because it's typical of Cradle of Filth, not because they add anything to the music.

This album just sounds uninspired, monotonous, dull, and forgettable. I prefer Thornography to this album.

That being said, the music still isn't as bad as the album's cover. :yuk:

I'll probably end up picking this up in the future. Cradle are a guilty pleasure of mine, although they weren't considered "guilty" back in the Dusk... days. I have all of their albums but I doubt I could name a song off of the last few. The collector in me compels me to keep the discography complete. I've always liked the vast majority of Dani's lyrics. Also think the band suffered when Nick left. The drumming had no life after that.

I didn't even bother listening to Godspeed even though I could have copied it from a friend. Honestly the 3 albums before it were so bad that I simply lost interest in them. I'm just about at that state with Dimmu too.

I still think you're committing a crime by not enjoying Damnation and a Day, the lyrics are some of Dani's most captivating, and the music is just epic. :p

And I agree, I think Dimmu and Cradle are in the same boat.
