i heard shallow on the musicchoice channel on digital cable yesterday...frankly i thought it sucked. but i haven't heard the rest of deadwing so even though i love damnation i won't vote for it yet.

Well, even if Damnation only consisted of Windowpane, Damnation would still win. But then, it consists of that AND seven other good to great songs, most notable being Hope Leaves. So it really wins. Of course, Arriving Somewhere But Not Here is outstanding, and Deadwing on the whole is a great album, but Damnation has more great moments.

youre implying that windowpane is better than any song on deadwing?

have all of you gone completely mad?

i heard Lazarus and i was stoked for Deadwing. then i bought it, and now my review is every other song is mostly "meh". Damnation on the otherhand, is quite good.

@NineFeetUnderground: What's your problem? Yes, I like Windowpane better than any song on Deadwing. That's not a crazy thing to say -- it's not like Windowpane isn't a good song or something! I don't know why you're having such a hard time understanding that the OPETH FORUM contains more people who prefer OPETH to PORCUPINE TREE. It's not fanboyism, it's personal taste. You can ask me if I've gone mad if I ever make a statement like, 'OMG THIS NEW EMINEM SONG PWNS ANYTHING OFF DEADWING LSDK:JFO:J!!!!11111!11'.

I think the songwriting depth and quality on Deadwing is alot greater than the Damnation album. Damnation was sort of Opeth's baby-steps into that area of music and hence it's a little lacklustre. I figure all these years of being guitar and riff-centric, they figured Damnation could push through on the quality of the main parts alone. Whilst it does have some nice parts in it, the production, layering and multi-tonality of Deadwing surpasses it.

Whilst I may dislike Steve's collaboration with Opeth, it's easy to see that he's a great producer who can evoke whatever the piece of music in question may need, to push it that little bit further in the sonic spectrum.

imo:

great Damnation songs = Windowpane, Death Whispered.., Closure, Hope Leaves
great Deadwing songs = Deadwing, Halo, Arriving Somwhere.., Mellotron Scratch

hmm, looks like a TIE.

that's not to say, the excluded tracks aren't good, but just not "great." both albums are really good. i'm not really one to have to pick albums as this is better than this..no THIS is better than this. just, whatever, ranking doesn't matter really. i listen to what i feel like, when i'm in the mood for it. hence, my vote goes to neither.

I don't think there is anything to "get". You talk as if this is objective. Which album is more diverse, better production, etc.? Deadwing absolutely. But the OP asks which we like better. That is an opinion. I happen to like Damnation more than Deadwing. I think it's an amazing album to chill and relax to which is usually why I listen to music. I'm not saying Damnation is a better album. All that I am saying is I enjoy listening to Damnation more than Deadwing.

Just for the record...I think Deadwing is great. Not trying to bash it at all.
