Damnation was sort of Opeth's baby-steps into that area of music and hence it's a little lacklustre. I figure all these years of being guitar and riff-centric, they figured Damnation could push through on the quality of the main parts alone. Whilst it does have some nice parts in it, the production, layering and multi-tonality of Deadwing surpasses it.
