forget the "learned environments" comment. you clearly dont understand what im talking about and im not willing to take it further.

Right. I guess I am not 'learned' enough to understand what you mean.

and you might be right with your comment about my maturity. im only having fun. after all, this IS an internet forum.

Here's the thing, I don't subscribe to the school of thought that an internet environment is any different from a real world one. I know there are loads of people who always go 'lol its just an internet forum m8' as if that makes it fucking okay to do whatever you please. Having fun by annoying other people is just childish beyond belief, pretty much along the lines of people who do things like teamkilling or cheating in an online game just to screw up other people's fun. You think this is fun? I think talking about music is fun. That's mainly why I come here. Hence why I get annoyed when I open random threads and instead of music discussion all I see is a bunch of people acting like annoying teenagers and calling eachother names because someone happens to like a band that the other person doesn't.

All I want is some *vaguely* (let's not overdo it) intelligent and civil discussion about *music* and not about how much this forum sucks or how much person X is a moron because he likes band Y.

i think youre glass is a little half empty here my friend.

I am a pessimist. I know.

were merely making it so people might actually watch what they say before they do from now on

I get that. I just don't really think it's helping any. This has been going on for ages and there are always going to be new people who sign up and start some stupid thread or say something dumb. I think it would work better to just for the most part ignore them and focus on keeping threads that have potential to actually remain interesting and not degenerate into, well, this (and yes, I know I am just as much to blame).

In the end what this forum really needs is some good moderation so the community doesn't need to do stuff like this at all. A decent FAQ that answers all the questions and then lock every single thread asking something that is inthere already with a message referring to the FAQ. The whole vagueness of the forum rules (and the completely arbitrary way in which they are applied, especially by Mrs. Opeth.com) and near invisible moderators is really not helping things at all.

Anyway, I'm going to bed and dream about fairies and rainbows.

i have none of this "maturity" :p

but yeah maybe i shouldn't have been so hostile in my last few posts

Disregard my comments in the post above, then.

i actually agree with all of this. maybe the root of the problem lies elsewhere. god forbid someone starts a thread about katatonia...but its plenty fine to have 300 polls on what guitar picks peter lindgren used on lamentations omgomg.

i was going to respond to this post but i suddenly thought COUNTERSTRIKE and started laughing when i read the part about cheating in online games. besides i'd only be fueling the fire

edit: NULL POST

The reason you are seeing more of us over here, btw, is that the other forum might well be closing soon due to gunhaver being gunhaver. So rather than a sudden migration, people are easing themselves back into this forum.

However, the state of this forum is pretty sad. The majority of threads are retreads or utterly void of interest. Some threads have interest potential, but are then spoiled by comments like "I don't enjoy clean vocals"

Heres a helpful tip to avoid constant flames: do not mention symphony x, dream theater or pain of salvation as your favourite music, asking for more in that vein. It is tiring seeing this so very very often when both metal and prog have so much more to offer, and you will not get friendly responses if you consider them the be-all of music. Im not saying not to like them (though really, please don't), but patience wears thin when after so many MANY threads of helpful advice on other, better bands is ignored in lieu of asking who sings like Russel Allen.

Ignoring the genuinely stupid vocals part of his opening, here are a few darker bands/albums id recommend (not necessarily 'prog'):

Tenhi - MaaÄeT
Ulver - Perdition City
Anathema - Judgement
Morte Macabre - Symphonic Holocaust
Katatonia - Last Fair Deal Gone Down

that is pretentious. ex. "please, at least pretend to like the music I am into. It will make my stay on this forum more pleasant" oh, pain of salvation is among my favorites btw deal with it

oh, I read the rest of the post. good point

It is pretentious to desire that people know (and discuss) more than 3 bands (well, 4 including Opeth)? Damn. I guess im just pretentious then. My mom will be so disappointed in me. :(

edit: Reading entire paragraphs before responding really does help, doesn't it?

reading your own post helps too. you said don't mention those bands not ONLY mention those bands

anyway, Meshuggah

You trying to get semantic on me, boy? Technically i did not specify - my statement can (and was intended) on reading not to mention just one of those 3; i did not exclude liking them + others.

I said it and I will say it again. Nevermore. Yes, they are very dark, and they have only clean vocals, but are on the heavy side as well as amazing guitar playing heaviness. Also they are progressive.:headbang:

I have obviously missed your point when you commented on my recommendation of Anathema,

Your reply,
'God, why even post such stupidity? No singing! Vocals ruin music! Nothing clean! The unique mixture of gorgeous melancholy, stirring guitar work, crisp yet lush vocals and a true sense of what it is to 'progress' one's music is NOT WELCOME HERE!'

If so, terribly sorry old chap,
if not, duhh I don't understand
