Dark prog

You know what I have just been listening to Ihsahn's new effort the Adversary (see thread on this topic) and it might be what you are looking for dark and progressiveness, if you liked Emporer then definitely give this album a try.

some of the darkest prog you'll ever hear.

burzum - hlidskjalf or daudi baldirs

Judging by what you've asked in this thread, there's a small chance you might like it. If you don't you can go fuck yourself. :)

It is pretentious to desire that people know (and discuss) more than 3 bands (well, 4 including Opeth)? Damn. I guess im just pretentious then. My mom will be so disappointed in me. :(

edit: Reading entire paragraphs before responding really does help, doesn't it?

I get your point with Dream theater, but come on Symphony X are gods..

where do you get Ulver and bands like that CDs in NZ?
or do you just download? ( i hate downloading music, I buy all my stuff)

You know, i still enjoy Images & Words. But the phrase 'one trick pony' always jumps to mind when i think of DT.

Anyway, i get my cds by a) hunting around cd shops nearly every week, and b) using amazon.com or fishpond.co.nz. I havn't bought all the Ulver cds yet actually - hopefully going to buy either William Blake's or First Decade this weekend at Real Groovy. I think my weirdest find at Real Groovy was Silence Teaches You How To Sing in the bargain bin for $10 :headbang:

Trademe can be great also. You've just gotta keep your eyes open for these things, unless you don't mind paying exhorbitant prices.

first decade in the machines is probably the last ulver (or rather, ulver related) album to get, if you want to get it at all. it's just some not-so-tasty noise/glitch remixes of ulver's songs by the likes of merzbow (there is one new song, but it doesn't save the cd). it's nowhere as good as the silence ep's, though the remixes there are rather similar in approach to the music on the ep's. the william blake album has some obvious flaws, but there are excellent moments on it. you might want to get that first.

I have the mp3s of William Blake's, so already know and enjoy that. First Decade i do not know at all, but have seen it at a reasonable price - and hey, Ulver have not steered me wrongly yet, so i have no reason to doubt them.

I usually end up going for just one cd, and return home with 4 or 5, so we'll see what happens.

the one remix by ulver on the album ('crack bug', remix of the song 'nattens madrigal' from the vargnatt demo) is indeed pretty good. sorry i said in the above post that it was a new song. the remix of 'speak dead speaker' by martin horntveth is interesting and worth a listen. upland's remix of 'lost in moments' is ok but nothing special. i find the others difficult to listen to.

I think Anathema (not the early stuff.) is fantastic, though im very anxious about the new album, not liking the mp3 they put out at all. Well, and that whole 'band not having a label' part can't help either.
I agree, the mp3 did not exactly excite, fingers crossed.
It is a bit easy to take things the wrong way around these parts, still you live & learn - welllll sometimes :)

holy shit... you can't talk about dark prog and say liquid tension experiment, symphony x, edge of sanity too...
for real. those bands are pretty... opposite of dark.

Ulver definitely fits though. Head Control System.

The music this man is looking for doesn't really exist. I've tried. Morte Macabre is pretty much as dark as it gets with actual prog.

Wolverine
Riverside
I.N.D.U.K.T.I.
Dark Suns
Nevermore
Disillusion
Empyrean Sky

These might be what you're looking for...
