Dark prog

Ken, it was a joke in that he asked for no clean vocals. You know, a bit of the ol' sarcasm? I think Anathema (not the early stuff.) is fantastic, though im very anxious about the new album, not liking the mp3 they put out at all. Well, and that whole 'band not having a label' part can't help either.

"Nevermore is a North American progressive/thrash metal band from Seattle, Washington assembled in 1991. Their precise musical style is debated by fans and critics alike. The band incorporates elements from styles such as death, speed, and progressive metal into their songs, and also makes use of acoustic guitars and a wide range of vocal styles."

Wanker
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"Wanker...It is particularly used of someone (usually male) who is self-obsessed and/or a show-off. It has the similar meanings and overtones to American pejorative terms such as "jerk", "jerk-off", or "prick"."

What is some dark sounding prog, besides Opeth. I've been trying to find more prog besides Opeth and Liquid tension expirement...I've tried checking out stuff like Camel, porcupine tree, king crimson, rush, etc. But thing is, i'm having trouble finding anything dark. And anything with vocals that would not irritate me. I'm not a big fan of clean vocals, but i enjoy Akerfeldt's voice alot, symphony x vocals are good, soi is the DT vocalist when NOT trying to sound like metallica...But Rush for example, i'm not feeling that much due to the vocals.

So any suggestions for prog that sounds dark, with vocals i might enjoy or no vocals? Maybe specific songs, even by the stuff i listed.
wow...uhh. Those are pretty specific requirements. I'm sure there's some art rock band out there like that, so good luck finding them! In the mean time, why not try out Van Der Graaf Generator. If you can get used to his vocals, they are amazing. Some of their stuff is quite "dark."

Try that Embers of Euphoria demo. Free d/l too. It's pretty thrashy and the guitar tone is a lot more prominent than other prog metal bands, but it has a fairly dark edge to it (despite having a vocalist that sounds like LaBrie).

It's awesome how reading the first few pages of this thread gives me the predominant impression of, "Wow, the 'opethforum'ers sure are pissed about losing their station. They're so angry about it that they're basically going to lambast the hell out of this new one all the while not recognizing the irony that they KEEP POSTING regardless." It reminds me of this one nutty preacher I once heard, "Like a dog returneth to lap up his vomit, so does a sinner return to his sin."

I'm saying this from the point of view of someone that also frequented the opethforum quite a bit, so don't try to use that against me. Thanks in advance.
