Death Metal

:ill:

Noooooo thanks. I thought it was terrible

I fucking hate blastbeats and those vocals......

You fucking hate death metal then!! :p

I listened to Nile for the first time in fucking ages today, forgot how much I enjoyed In Their Darkened Shrines

Fucking epically epic song...

Kinda! lol

The only Death-Metal band I RREEEEAAAALLLLY like is Death. Starting to get into Obituary too, but Death is still the best.

Oh, and Nile's drummer is the Terminator in disguise.

Cynic, Death and Atheist are the best in my opinion. I just don't really like any other death metal bands all that much.....

Okay, I said I'd do this in another thread so, here's my top 10 death metal albums of all time (In no particular order);

Morbid Angel - Altars of Madness
Atheist - Unquestionable Presence
Bolt Thrower - Those Once Loyal
Autopsy - Severed Survival
Death - Human
Entombed - Left Hand Path
Dismember - Massive Killing Capacity
Obituary - Cause of Death
Terrorizer - World Downfall
Cannibal Corpse - The Bleeding

EDIT - Oh shit, and Decapitated - Nihility, 11.

Hard one that.... still, no particular order (again):

Gorguts - Considered Dead
Obituary - Cause of Death
Morbid Angel - Altars of Madness
Death - The Sound of Perseverance
Entombed - Morning Star
Cannabis Corse - Tube of the Resinated
Nile - Annihilation of the Wicked
Cannibal Corpse -Butchered At Birth
Pestilence - Testimony of the Ancients
rotector - A Shedding of Skin

I love Death Metal!

Mandatory stuff:
DEATH
-------
Everything really. I would forgive skipping The Sound of Perseverance, just because Chuck changed his vocals radically, for the worse imo. Up till then, his vocals are the best along with John "Death Breath" Tardy of Obituary and Vincent of Morbid Angel...

For raw, old school go for the first three, Scream Bloody Gore, you could argue this is the bastard child of extreme thrash with Venom, excellent songwriting, the classics being Zombie Ritual, Baptized in Blood, the self-titled and my personal favourite, Evil Dead.
Leprosy, the rawness is somehow tamed, the whole sound has settled on classic old school death metal. Pull the Plug is ridiculously catchy, self-titled, Open Casket, awesome album!
Spiritual Healing, things are getting serious now, more complex songwriting starts to creep in (which will explode with Human later) but this is the definition of Florida Death Metal. The self-titled track, Within the Mind and Altering the Future are the top moments imo.

Human. OK, start of the new era, complete line-up change and the recruitment of one of the finest players gathered in one album ever. The best would be the next one actually, Individual... 2/4 Cynic, 1/4 Sadus and Chuck. Death Metal heaven. Technical as fuck, brilliant crushing songwriting and perhaps the best Death song ever, Lack of Comprehension. I'm not gonna pick anything else, the whole album smokes.

Individual Thought Patterns, one of my favourite albums ever, this time the line-up is just orgasmic. Gene Hoglan, favourite drummer ever, check. Andy Larocque, favourite guitarist ever (King Diamond muthafuckers!), check! DiGiorgio again and more prominent bass sound? Check. All in the hands of Chuck, the result is mindblowing. Now, this might be a bit more complex on first listen, certainly the most "progressive" album in their discography but a bit of persistence will unlock the magic and everything will flow like Nirvana! Overactive Imagination, Trapped in a Corner, The Philosopher (pop compared to the rest of the album complexity-wise!) are the starters. Fantastic!

Symbolic. Perhaps their most universally popular album. Brilliant, absolutely brilliant, self-titled track, Crystal Mountain, Perennial Quest, 1000 Eyes, basically, the whole thing, it's an amazing album. These 3 complete the absolute mandatory "new" Death albums (Human, ITP and this).

Next...
Morbid Angel - Altars of Madness through Domination. First two are considered the absolute classics, but Covenant and Domination are mandatory too. Sick riffage, mind-blowing drumming and a whole atmosphere that sets them apart from anything else. Majestic, heavy as in really heavy, one of a kind. I don't care that much for the newer stuff but lots of people do, but there are quite a few albums to check out before those.

Deicide - self-titled. One of the best death metal florida style albums out there. Great songwriting, sound and playing, think Reign in Blood death-metallized. The self-titled track, Sacrificial Suicide are top notch tracks. Legion that followed was more extreme and had more individuality but I prefer the debut. The following, Once Upon the Cross is another death metal classic, heavy as fuck. Those are the mandatory ones, the rest are hit and miss imo.

Malevolent Creation - The Ten Commandments, another classic florida release, Slayer-influenced as well and I friggin LOVE the vocals on this one, thrash/death really. Malevolent Creation, Thou Shall Kill!, Premature Burial, can't go wrong with any of those tracks. Retribution placed them firmly in the death metal sound, and it's my favourite, fucking awesome album. Stillborn was crap imo but the next one, Eternal was back into form, brutal, has blastbeats but not overdoing it, a bit one-dimensional vocals but great, great riffs (which is where it's at!). After that they never failed to release at least good albums but they have become a bit repetitive. I would recommend In Cold Blood as well.

Bolt Thrower - A favourite band, tons of character and great discography. The IVth Crusade is MANDATORY, as is their last one, Those Once Loyal. First releases are a buit raw but have so many classics (like Cenotaph, World Eater, In Battle there is no Law) but IVth Crusade (what a song!), ...For Victory and Those Once Loyal find the band in their top-form. Karl Willets' vocals are awesome too, very unique! I am dying to see them live, will finally see them on the 30th of May, can't wait!

Carcass - The other awesome brits! Now, they have two phases, the grind and the classic death albums, plus SwanSong which finds them quite mellowed down. I am a huge fan of the two death metal albums, Necroticism (Descanting the Insalubrious) and Heartwork. Necroticism is more universally accepted, solid death metal, great riffs and an insanely catchy track (Corporate Jigsore Quandary). Heartwork was more successful and made them quite known but the abundance of melodies alienated some of their more extreme-minded fans. Personally, I think it's a bloody masterpiece, and it's the biggest inspiration for all the melodic death acts from Sweden (like At the Gates for example). Heartwork, Embodiment, Buried Dreams, all awesome songs.

Entombed - First two are mandatory for the listener who likes his death metal raw, dark and to the face. Both are Classics, with a capital C and hugely influential, Left Hand Path and Clandestine of course. After that begins their death n' roll era, which has many fans but also haters. I love 'em. Wolverine Blues is the most necessary and classic but I will also second the Morning Star suggestion, fantastic album.

Obituary - Back to the US, one of the most recognised death metal bands, and rightfully so, Obituary. Slowly we Rot and Cause of Death should be in EVERY death metal collection. Unique sound, they groove terribly efficiently, Tardy's vox are one of a kind and you will love the lyrics: There aren't any, just some vague words here and there, the gaps filled with random growling, classic! As for songs, Slowly we Rot, Cause of Death, Find the Arise will all do the trick nicely, make you come back for more.

Pestilence - Dutch's best death metal band imo (and probably the majority's as well!). Maleus Maleficarum is raw, thrash/death with VanDrunen's best vocal performance imo, some people don't like it though, it reminds them of Lemmy for some reason (I don't hear it). Check out Parricide, Anthropomorphia and Commandments to get the idea. Consuming Impulse was their classic death metal album, loads of fans and then came the prog death ala Death release, Testimony of the Ancients. Mandatory, check out the video, Land of Tears, greast stuff.

Running out of steam now but I'll just throw some more suggestions:
Atheist - first two are mandatory prog death, go for Elements as well but that's not as much worshipped.
Cynic - Focus. If you can handle jazz and fusion coupled with death metal, buy it, blind purchase. Hugely influential and one of a kind
Immolation - Dawn of Possession is their uberclassic but I would say they are one of the most consistent and loved death acts out there.
Nocturnus - The Key. Death metal with keyboards. Unheard of at the time! Everybody loved it though!
Cannibal Corpse, if you can handle the vocals of Chris Barnes (low gutteral stuff) go for them, I would suggest The Bleeding as well, the bridghe between their new ear and the old, technical and brutal. Most fans either prefer the early albums though, more to the face or the Corpsegrinder era, with amazing vocals (imo) and technical yet brutal songwriting. I don't think there is a universal suggestion here, mine would be Gore Obsessed but I think I am in the minority. Dunno.

From newer bands, I loved Dying Fetus - Killing on Adrenaline. Old school playing, great songwriting, funny vocals, even more low-guttural than Chris Barnes but that didn't ruin it for me, some people actually like that. That changed since then, they are a class-act modern brutal death metal band now.
Nile seems to get lots of love, I like them well enough but I tend to get tired after a while. Live they were boring as fuck but if you are like me and like to watch unbelievable drummers play, you're home free!
Misery Index (with ex-Dying Fetus members) gets my vote as well. Love them and their old school songwriting, they kill live as well!
Suffocation - Breeding the Spawn. Heavy, heavy, heavy. Excellent stuff.

Uhm, what else? Just namedropping now, sorry, Master, Pungent Stench, Napalm Death (of course! *slaps forehead*, Harmony Corruption from the old stuff, Order of the Leech from the new stuff), Benediction, Morgoth, Gorguts (first two, then approach with caution to the more off-the-map technical stuff), Autopsy (Severed Survival, Mental Funeral)...K, gotta stop writing now! Phew!

Ten favourite albums (one album per band else half the list would be Death):
Death - Individual Thought Patterns
Malevolent Creation - Retribution
Carcass - Heartwork
Obituary - Cause of Death
Bolt Thrower - The IVth Crusade
Cynic - Focus
Morbid Angel - Altars of Madness
Deicide - Deicide
Entombed - Left Hand Path
Pestilence - Maleus Maleficarum

Why? Because they have stupid lyrics and their singer is an asshole? Cause I can't find any other reason.

Dungeon Vic, I have to say I agree with almost every single point you made in that colossal post! Good taste, but I would say that... I agree with 99.99% of what you said!

:kickass:

Okay, okay haha it's... Heartwork. I just, can't dig it as much as everyone else. Don't get me wrong, I think the production almost single-handedly created the blueprint for the 'melodic death metal' sound, and it DOES have some good tracks (like you said, Heartwork, Embodiment, Buried Dreams), but I see majority of the album as filler.

Anyway, apart from that one point, I totally agree with you. Especially about Human/Individual Thought Patterns era Death.

:( I thought it would be some minute detail over Cannibal Corpse or something. Heartwork? Filler? No, no! I guess if it hasn't clicked, that fair enough but I wouldn't call the songs filler. I'd say about 6 songs are very recognisable and distinctive, you know, have their own identity and purpose... These would be Buried Dreams (great cool melody to open the album), No Love Lost (video), Heartwork (the first video), Embodiment (heavy, slow, mosh worthy), Arbeit Macht Fleisch (the riffs!) and Blind Leading the Blind with the guitar "battle" at the beginning which moves into that stop riffage you kill babies to! I like the other 4 songs of course but I guess those are for the fans of the album, I don't usually skip them.

I think it's an album that will eventually click. Or not! haha, I dunno, maybe it's a personal thing...
