100% dependent on the drummer. if he cant play then fake it. i enjoy working with good drummers but i enjoy not working with shit recorded tracks that will only sound mediocre after editing even more.
You can make programmed drums sound real as long as you have multiple samples of each drum part and mixing skills. This thread is kinda ironic because many ppl who record real drums at the end sound quantized and super compressed like programmed drums. Also I'm pretty sure many videogames have used programmed drums and sound real as hell
This depends on so many factors that I can't vote for either. Ofcourse I'd love to vote for "real drums" but most of the time the tracks I get (that have been done the cheapo way) have huge problems in them. I will not be happy with the snare track if 1) the snare is tuned like ass 2) there's crazy hihat bleed 3) it's been mic'ed in a weird way.
How is that more fake than using samples since... programmed drums are samples that are being triggered with midi. Everyone is using samples nowadays so I'd say programmed drums are just as authentic as using samples on anything.
