Does he deserve that much credit?

Well, I remember when I heard the Nirvana Bleach record, which was big around here & the north west prior to it spreading world wide. That wasn't a bad record, raw, garage like, but nothing epic. It was just another band from the area that was cool at the time. There's people that hate the genre & people that "liked" certain aspects of it. Did Cobain kill the Glam bands?! I don't think so. I think the glam band killed themselves off, too many b & c rated versions of the originators. It got boring, eventually that was what killed grunge, bands from Los Angeles & Alabama?! That was the end of that.

Overall... I don't like Nirvana, but the guy wasn't a bad song writer. He has some good "poppy" hooks, but they were presented wrong by their heavy, distorted sound. Had they sounded more like Matthew Sweet they would have been great songs.

Baldy... just my opinion here, but.... I used to think that Chris Cornell was great as well. I got to see them live on the "Loud Love" tour, this was when he was still "singing" and not just doing some low mumbling like he does now. However this live show, at which they were "opening" for Voivod I might add, completely changed my mind about him. They, as a band were awful live, and Cornell sounded ridiculous squealing in and out of key, attempting to hit notes on the album that he clearly could not pull off. Since then I realized why he sings the way he does now.

As far as the whole "grunge" thing goes... I'll take Mother Love Bone and The Fluid as my personal favorites from the scene.

I never really liked Laynes voice lol cant help it I always liked Jerrys better .... But man some their songs ...just Dark ..... and filled with the real sense of Happy drug induced dispair fucked up shit ..... other more serious stuff to ofcourse

jeeez plan,no need to shatter my illusions of him so brutally!!
i've never seen him live, and to be honest if what your describing is a usual gig for him,i dont think i want to!
i couldnt imagine him being a bad live singer, its wierd you know.i guess i love his voice so much on vinyl,i dunno,i just assumed he'd rip live.
saw alice in chains live and layne staley and jerry cantrell really did rip live.thought chris cornell would be the same.
i think i'm gonna cry now.

One thing to consider here though Baldy... this was one night only that I witnessed this. For all I know he could've had the flu or bronchitis at this point in time, anyone else ever seen Soundgarden live that could offer an opinion one way or the other????

BTW- Voivod kicked complete ass that night (orinial line-up), that's who I was really going to see. The fact that Soundgarden was opening was just a bonus.

I have 4 or 5 video boots and he sounds like crud for the most part in all of them. He just can't pull off the high stuff live.

gotta go with the mighty swine that aic were the best band of that particular scene imo.layne was an awsome singer,a real talent that i miss much more than kurt, although i do have a soft spot for nirvana.good memories of that time.
however, gotta disagree with the swine over chris cornell of soundgarden.the man is the best, hands down,my fave vocalist in the rock/metal sphere.i'd give both my arms and a leg to be able to sing like him. :worship: :worship:

to sum up and stop being v.v.boring,cobain deserves the same thought from me that many of the other influential musos that have died get.he's there with layne, phil lynott, cliff burton, steve clarke and a lot of other guys that influenced my life in some way musically.no more,no less.

When I was young I had alot of shit happen, and I got into the wrong crowd at young age (11). Let me put it this way, I was dropping acid and doing many things I will forever regret. SO yeah, it was my generation when I was taking part of it. I was just younger than most. I was into Nirvana and all the blah blah...shit. You wouldn't even have a clue, I sorry if I coming on strong. The good thing that came out of the reckless youth was that I grew up much faster than most, then watched others my age fuck there life up when they were 16 and 17, I already learned allot by then. For one grunge sucks.

I like your spunk..... and I Completely Understand what your saying! I'm a recovering Alcoholic .....and hahaha I quite before my 21st birthday (21 being the drinkin age here), And I'v done My share and Baldies share and just about everybody elses share of Mind altering ummmm Items Plus I smoke dope like a chiminy ..... whoops I'm getting side tracked .... anyways what I'm trying to say is ..... I remember you in a sense.... you were the very young kid that was just hangin out or what not and ya I know .... Drug culture can really suck ....

Sorry to tell you this but just because you were doing drugs and listening to grunge at the age of 11 does not make you part of that generation. I was lsitening to KISS at the age of 9 in 1978 but I'm not part of the 70's generation. I always thought the music of one's gen is between when they are 15 and 25 years old. You may not like the music of or identify with youre gen (like Trixxi, he likes the 80's glam scene) but that does not change what gen you are part of..... I'm a member of Generation X.... you are a member of the .Com Gen .... which is cool, nothing wrong with that.

lol hahahhaa what I was talkin about had nothing to do with generations lol

dont get me wrong sinner,i'm not saying your out of order or anything, but i'm like greeno on this,if you consider it a generational thing, then by definition of your age you were the generation after us.
you just seemed to get started a lot earlier than most!
again, please dont take offence, because i dont mean any,but when i was say,19,listening to that kind of stuff, and i saw an 11 year old doing what you did,i wouldnt consider him part of my generation,i would have called social services or kicked his parents asses.

ill probably get lynched for saying this but i dont really mind nirvana and unlike what a lot of people say, i dotn think kurt cobain killed rock n roll either.
I agree 100%. Metal killed itself because of saturation. To make a buck, record companies were signing any band that they thought they could form into a strong metal band be it a hair band, thrash band or whatever. The "average" music fan grew tired of it. It was as simple as that.
If people want to knock bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Tool, Alice in Chains and Soundgarden, they can do that. It is a free country, but the truth is, those guys were originators. I don't like them and out ofr all those bands I own one CD by Tool and one by PJ, but those bands had balls to be different and I won't knock them for that. I don't listen to them..... but I don't hate them.

I didn't mean to ignore Pearl Jam their 10 & Vs discs are the only ones that I still own, though I think that at some point Eddie then took over being "Mr. Depressing." Soundgarden where heavy, but I think Chris' vocals were at times annoying(to me).

Yeah I don't listen to "10" very often, but that's pretty high quality music. Well written stuff. Soundgarden was certainly a little heavier, but I don't think Chris had that emotic touch Eddie did and they were not the songwriters PJ was in their early career. It is possible PJ could have developed into a monster, but those (hard) drugs just take away so much. One of the reasons I never tried to make it in music is because I know how much I love alchohol. I drink too much as it is. In that type of environment, it wouldn't work.

I see what your saying, I understand. Your right but I wouldn't consider myself in my generation because I'm not like most people my age. That's why I was in a band with people in their 30's. I listen to music that was made when I was born. I have 1 female friend because I hate the whole attiude of women. I perfer to go fishing and smoke a joint rather than shop or gossip. I perfer to listen to REAL heavy metal and expand my music rather then freak out about what in the hell I'm going to wear. Don't get me wrong I don't look like a man or am I a dike. But I suppose that is why I wouldn't consider myself in my own generation, I'm a ashamed of what it is. I would wish I could grown up in a time when the music I love was there, god I'd give my arm to see the powerslave tour or the defenders of the faith tour. You guys are great though, atleast you don't bash the shit out of me for trying to get out my own time. I have always been the baby in the group and always had to defend myself, amongst people who thought either I wasn't metal enough because of my age or gender. But the truth is, I'm more metal then most of the fuckers these days.

Y a know what Sinner? you sound like One cool fucking chick ...... I can Identify with alot of what you said there ..... hahahah I hated my Generation .... always thought I should have been a teen in the 80s ....so unless you say somethin stupid ..... ya dont have to keep your guard up here .... ya know what I mean?

Thanks for keeping me in line, no I'm 19. I won't be 20 untill September. Where are you from? New England? Minnesota is really nothing but a freaking tundra. I can't wait to travel soon with my job. My good friend is from Maine, I have always wanted to go there to see the whales.
