I think having a flutist to play at clean sections and also as a rhythm instrument during heavy parts would be amazing. It would be silly for other metal bands, but Opeth are a prog band and it would suit them well.

What do you say?
I thought this thread was a joke.

Only if they start wearing tights and frollock through the forest as well.

yeah I vision a concept album about "A Midsummer's Night Dream'"

but I don't think it'll stand up next to Mendellsohn's version.

Yeah maybe the occasional string section to the acoustic parts, could combine well with Per on piano. Not too much though... they're Opeth not Anathema.

Sounds like a flute synth at about 7:10 in GoP to me.

I'm pretty sure that's a mellotron (analogue to my ears?) with a flute tape.

The mellotron can cover a lot of the sounds you guys want to hear: strings, flute, choral, etc, etc. And it does a way better job than any overly digital sounding synths.

But yeah, I don't see the need for any more full time instruments/members. If there was a touch here or there (say, a cello or flute part in a song) I could just see a guest doing it, and simply for the part it was needed (ie: so they're not trying to find places to play all over the album). Most of the instruments I could see having 'guest appearances' would slot in nicely over the mellow moments; give them a distinct feel.

As for what types of instruments, mainly strings, or a flute (as I said, over ONE or TWO parts, not the whole album). Also possibly a more obscure instrument; a hurdy gurdy or some such. I could also see Per using a some really interesting vintage/antique organs, pianos, harpsichords, etc.

There's a lot of room to subtly experiment with soundscapes, but it needs to be done just right, and not in every moment of every track.

i'd love to see mikael pull out a jazz flute magically from inside his shirtsleeves right before the DOTF clean part and just go crazy soloing on that thing jumping into the croud going from tabletop to tabletop, contorting his body all around, using every part of his body to get every last ounce of emotion into the jazz flute solo, as the crowd collectively sighs and orgasms spasmically to the rhythym of the solo.

It would also be neat to see Opeth experimenting with their guitars more, such as using a e-bow, or even a slide sometimes. .

i think mikael mentioned somewhere that they have been using an e-bow since the still-life album ,, and they've used a slide on drapery falls,, but yeah i agree with u they should do it more

by the way,, what exactly is an e-bow? i mean, how does it affect the tone ?

Yeah, I meant where the slide and stuff was more pronounced, such as one of the main rhythm guitars. For example (and before I get flamed no, I am not in any way comparing Opeth to Guns N' Roses) in GN'R's song 'Bad Obsession' one of the guitars plays a slide and the other uses standard fingering on basically the same riff, and it just sounds interesting. Not that I would want that song throughout an entire song. Steven Wilson had them using lots of weird guitar processors and sounds, but most of that was for random leads/lead layers, so I think maybe the incorporation of some of that into a low riff or rhythm might be interesting.

Umm, an e-bow basically vibrates the strings with electronic pulses, so it sounds more bowed than plucked/picked. You hold it above the string, there is no physical contact. It is a pretty cool sound.

alright martins lets take that bass for a walk and keep the cymbals splashy.

No, they don't need to add flutes. But if they decide to add one it's fine by me. I don't find any part in their music where I think to myself "they really need a flute part here."
