I've downloaded two tracks from Witchfinder General (one from the Soviet Invasion EP and the other from the Friends album). How is this doom? I mean, it sounds amazing, but is this really a doom band?

Death Penalty is a fucking great doom album, ignore the NWOBHM purist scumbags.

What IS the deal with drone doom btw ? I just don't get it.

Forest of Equilibirum is a much, much darker album, much heavier and intense, and one of the first modern albums to dare to be REALLY slow. It was quite unusual for the time it was released, and there are some real gems on there. It's also quite raw.

The Ethereal mirror is more experimental in a sense, and more upbeat, combining Witchfinder General and Pentagram inspired riffage with a mainstream rock sensibility. The songs are more memorable, and the production much less murky.

Either album is a corker, and I really couldn't choose between them.

They were best (imo) on The Carnival Bizarre.

Not really. It's not half the "return to form" it has been lauded as i.m.o. Some of the songwriting is undeniably great (Corpsecycle, North Berwick Witch Trials), but there is far too much filler on there. Of their latter output, VIIth coming was a much rounder, more completed album.
