I just saw their shirt at Hot Topic tonight. How did this happen? I don't get it. Are they really different than most of the bands we talk about around here? I mean, why Dragonforce and not Stratovarius or Symphony X?

It boggles my mind too. They had a full page article in a local Baltimore paper. We're talking about DRAGONFORCE. lol. 2 years ago all they were was the "extreme power metal act" that only a few of us knew (or cared) about. Never would you even contemplate seeing their shirt next to an Arctic Monkeys shirt at Hot Topic (LOL). And what boggles my mind even more is, people that have been under a rock the last few years think they are some sort of new trend, and shouldn't fall under the same category as the rest of the power metal bands. Just because they blew up takes nothing away from the 3 amazing albums they have. Unfortunately this probably doesn't mean the beginning of a power metal explosion in America; but it does give us hope that the truest form of the art has finally struck a nerve somewhere on the ladder of commercialized music. I hope a year from now we aren't like "remember those nintendo metal geeks?"

On the note of "extreme power metal," Cellador's album comes out on tuesday. And it's going to be ON SALE at my store. WOW. Talk about timing. I hope that album does really well too. Everyone that I've spoken to that is in awe of Dragonforce I have been telling about them. Cheers to face shattering speedy power metal, from any part of the world! :P

I dont get it either. I saw them at the New England metal festival a few months ago and you would swear Maiden was playing thats how big the buzz and crowd was for them, not to mention all the T-shirts the kids wore. They easily were the biggeest draw of the weekend. Even over Gamma Ray???? And yes its the younger people diggin this band.
Before there was "extreme Power Metal" it was just regular tradional Euro Power Metal that was not so over blown. Well with the exception of Rhapsody because they basically were one step away from Dragonforce at least in the speed department.
But Stratovarius, Gamma Ray, Blind Guardian, Angra, Edguy, those are the bands that deserved the kind of attention Dragonforce are getting years ago. But I kinda cant complain because maybe with the Force's success kids will go back and pay attention to the bands who made Dragonforce who they are? Kids need a serious lesson in the importance of ProgPower and what this festival did for those kinds of bands. Maybe I'm asking too much with that one?

They signed to Roadrunner Records, that's why! :kickass:

Isn't "extreme power metal" an oxymoron?

Shouldn't "extreme" and "metal" be redundant?

Anyway, if power metal in general catches on, it'll be all new bands that catch the hype, not anybody that was around in the 90s. The people in charge assume kids want people they can relate to playing the music, and all the old farts from the 90s from the continent don't qualify.

I thought Dragonforce was offensive when they released their debut... that they are going to reach general fandom? Obscene.

I just dont see what all the hype is about. I mean they just sound so generic to me. Every song other than the ballads has the same extreme speed uptempo doublebass, similiar melodies, and yadda yadda yadda.

To me they are Power Metals version of AC/DC so maybe that explains it. You heard 1 DF song, you've heard them all.

With DF, I openly realize that everysong is pretty much the same, but it kicks my ass so hard every time, that it doesnt even matter.

You've nailed it on the head. It's all due to roadrunner records. Look at Opeth when the signed to roadrunner, they went from a moderately sized niche band to the next big thing from Sweeden, with an alblum that wasn't even close to being their best work. In music its all about who you know and what label you're on thats all.

There is room for hope. This simply proves that there is indeed a significant audience for power metal in the US. There has just never been a medium for it. Roadrunner won't likely sign another power metal act any time soon, but Dragonforce's success could likely pave the way for newer--possibly home grown acts--to become widely popular. The older bands like Gamma Ray and Stratovarius don't really have a hope at all in making it big in the US though; these record companies are generally looking for fresher, younger bands.

Roadrunner doesn't necessarily guarantee popularity. Nightwish, for instance, came and went and most people didn't give a shit. While Dragonforce isn't my favorite band in the whole world, I'm very pleased that they're gaining recognition finally in the US for a genre that deserves it.

I'm not too into Dragonforce, but every person I know who is into them always begins their "have you heard of Dragonforce?" discussion by showing me that video of the guitar solo from that song that I don't remember the title of. A bunch of people are into it because of the "amazing" guitar work. I didn't see the big deal. He shreds really fast. So do a lot of other people. Guitarist aside, I don't really like the music that much either...just a personal taste thing. I like power metal, but Dragonforce just isn't doing anything for me.

I gotta side with DrumRman.....(is that even surprising anymore?) :heh:
They are ok, but like someone said, after a couple tunes, I've had my fill.
There's just nothing that sets them apart from the pack, IMO.

What store is that? I can't wait to pick up that album.

I think they are definately catchy, but I can only take them in small doses. My Spirit Will Go On was the song that caught my attention. Someone posted a video made by some goofy teens that was set to that tune, and I actually found myself kind of digging it. The video was beyond ridiculous, and the song ... like all Dragonforce stuff was just way over the top.

That's because Dragonforce's sound is so over the top and in your face and instantly accessible, whereas some of the other bands we like are either acquired tastes(Symphony X) or harken too much back to the 80s(Edguy and Stratovarius).

That being said it is rather shocking just how much they've gotten over in such a short time. But then Dragonforce, unlike just about any other European metal band I could mention, actually has worked their butts off to gain a following in the US. Most other bands figure there's no point. Then of course once Dragonforce makes the sound huge all our other favorite power metal bands will turn their speed up a few notches and start touring the US.
